I installed a 601 for a customer and found it to be a very good receiver - easy to setup, very good sound and good power for the price class. I also installed a 780, which uses a sort of stripped down version of the 502 and I found it to be a very capable receiver as well.

I own the 494 and I will say its better built than the 602 I now own too. although the 602 clearly has more power it isnt all that much needed and the 494 seems to be of better build quality by far.

I like my 602 but I miss my 494 that is now retired to the pool area. alot of features I miss about the 494 I wish the 602 had. the 494 also seems to have less audiable noise than the 602 to my ear. the 494 was a heck of a bargain and still the best built onkyo receiver I have owned yet.

I do like the EX and 7.1 feature though of the 602. I got the 602 for $280 shipped and refurbed. I bought the 494 back in the day from CC as open box for $150 which was a heck of a deal! I wish I sprung $100 more for the 702 refurn THX.

Yes, but the 330 has Logic 7 which decodes into the surround backs for 7.1 playback from analog stereo sources. I recently went from the Onkyo 770 receiver, HTR520 which did a great job driving the Oinks then Polk speakers. I think it was identical to the 502, just different marketing specs. Just added a HK235(refurb) and sold the Onkyo. A definite improvement in power and SQ to my ears. But I think the 502 is a quality product.

My refurb has been installed and calibrated. I'm new to 6.1 so I'm exploring that. Have to say I'm very impressed with the functionality and features for an entry level receiver. The refurb was also immaculate - no cosmetic issues whatsoever.
