Here is my final tally

I beat my total from last year by 10 and I learned a few things this year.
All Japanese horror movies are not created equal. J-horror like Ringu, Dark Water or Cure are a totally different beast than the gory, incoherent, and mostly pointless movies like Entrails of a Virgin or the Guinea Pig movies.
Hell of the Livng Dead is my new favorite Bruno Mattei movie! His use of stock footage almost out does Ed Wood.
No matter how old I get, I still love cheesy 80's horror!
After allowing myself to only watch horror movies for the month of October, I need to watch ANYTHING other than a horror movie tonight!

1. May

32. Brides of Dracula :star: :star: 1/2
Hammer fare that focuses on a dashing vampire, his brood of undead wives, and his interesting means of procuring those wives. As is the case with most of these films, Brides is heavy on the drama, deliberate in its pacing (not necessarily a bad thing), and features stunning cinematography.

33. The Curse of the Werewolf :star: :star: :star:
Probably the best Hammer film that I've seen to date (I'm still making my way through the recent set). This one follows a werewolf from before birth to death. The lycanthropic torture endured by the main character is very effectively conveyed here. Also of note is the way characters are introduced as significant and then dispatched, leaving the viewer a bit unsettled. This is similar to the tortuous and intentionally misleading trail that Hitchcock leads viewers down in Psycho. I look forward to seeing this one again.

34. Psycho :star: :star: :star: :star:
Certainly the classiest film I've seen this month. To me, Hitchcock's masterpiece is a prime example of the notion that genre is much less important than passion, competence, and respect for the material. This is only partially a knock on modern horror films, as I've encountered some really good ones. I do think, however, that Hitchcock respected the intelligence of his audience, a quality that is sorely lacking in many contemporary films. I watched Psycho with my girlfriend, who had never seen it before, and was struck by two things. First, how iconic the character and story are. There were some genuine surprises in store for her, but she was already well acquainted with Norman, the Bates Motel, and the shower scene (still, she had no idea that the "main" character would die less than half way into the proceedings.)
Secondly, while I was raving about Hitchcock's editing and shot composition ("Look at how he's perched that menacing bird above Norman's shoulder!"), she was able to enjoy the film on a more visceral level (although I suspect her filmic vocabulary is much greater than she lets on :) ). So it is both a great story and a work of high art.

35. It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown :star: :star: :star: 1/2
A childhood favorite that still appeals to me as an adult. Perfectly sweet, without ever being cloying.

36. Bluebeard :star: :star: 1/2
John Carradine stars as the notorious French painter and serial killer. Very good work from Carradine, who I found utterly convincing in the role. Also of note is the fantastic puppet show presentation of "Faust."

37. The Shining :star: :star: :star: 1/2
Does anyone else wish that Jack had taken his wife out with him? A great, deliberately over-the-top performance from Nicholson and some truly unnerving scenes are highlights here.

Splatter University (1984) 1/2:star:

Incredibly awful slasher film has kids on a campus being slaughtered by a maniac with a large knife. The director of this went on to make the cult classic Class of Nuke ‘Em High but no matter how you look at this thing it’s still awful. The acting is among the worst I’ve ever seen, the story makes no sense and the death scenes are all very lame and fake looking. I went ahead and gave it half a star for some unintentional laughs.

She Creature, The (1956) :star:1/2

An evil hypnotist puts his assistant under a trance but she just happens to be the reincarnation of a 300-year-old sea creature who returns to start killing. The basic premise of this film is fairly interesting but the thing doesn’t have an ounce of life to it. There’s way too much talk and when the monster is on screen not too much happens. The look of the creature is very good but that’s about all this film has to offer.

Jack the Ripper (1959) :star::star:1/2

Atmospheric and moody version of the infamous serial killer. This isn’t quite as good as the version with Klaus Kinski but it remained entertaining throughout. The director does a great job building up the atmosphere of 1888 London but for some strange reason he never pushes the “mystery” surrounding the case. He throws a lot of suspects at us but for some reason he never tries to build up a mystery film as to who the killer is.

Wrapped up with 3 classics: William Dieterle's parable of greed in a still-young America The Devil and Daniel Webster, the best Golden Age horror film and also the saddest horror film from any time Bride of Frankenstein, and Dario Argento's fever dream masterpiece and an all-time top 5 horror entry Suspiria.
(I can only count 2 of these for the challenge since I watched BOF and Suspiria last year and already had counted Nightmare Before Christmas, which I also watched last year.

First timers in Blue

Total Watched: 36
First Timers: 22

I was able to watch the same number as last year, despite a slow start and work interruptions. A good mix of time periods and film types with something of a zombie concentration this year. Also only managed to watch 1 film that had no value and even it wasn't bad enough to give an F too.

My favorite new discoveries are The Curse of the Cat People, Trouble Every Day, & They Came Back.

Next year I want to finally watch the Hammer Dracula and Frankenstein series' as well as a few other Hammer's, and maybe I'll finally get around to the Chick's With Tails Trilogy.

11 more films watched, to nicely round out this year's festivities (first-time viewings in blue):

40. THE SEVENTH VICTIM (1943) Another fine Val Lewton production, though it just barely qualifies as "real" horror, falling into more into the film noir/suspense area.

41. THE MAGIC SWORD (1962) Bert I. Gordon jumps onto the fantasy/adventure bandwagon, in the wake of the success of Ray Harryhausen's 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1958). Still, I include it here as it contains more horror elements than usual for this particular genre. Has its fair share of clumsy dialogue, wooden characters and dodgy special effects, but is also one of Gordon's best-realized films, boistered by the presence of pro character actors Basil Rathbone and Estelle Winwood.

42. ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) First-rate occult tale, one of Polanski's top films, though it plays more for suspense than outright horror. Not that I'm complaining. Highly recommended.

43. HOUSE OF WAX (1953) More entertaining than 1000 Dark Castle "reimaginings". Vincent Price is the man, Phyllis Kirk's a peach, Charles Bronson is everything you'd want in a mongoloid deaf-mute assistant, a terrific small comic performance from Carolyn Jones (the exact opposite of her more famous "Morticia Addams" character) plus you get the immortal "paddle-ball man", guaranteed to enliven any party! Highest recommendation.

44. THE FLY II (1989) Not up to Cronenberg's 1986 FLY film, but an okay sequel, and a decent monster movie in its own right. Pretty funny to see the private company's guards break out the machine guns, but ordered to "capture it unharmed" by their boss, when the Eric Stoltz fly-beast invades the complex.

45. WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953) I haven't seen the Spielberg remake, but I doubt I'll enjoy it nearly as much as this flick, one of my all-time favorites. "You can't buy a ride for love of MONEY!". Highest recommendation.

46. THE LADY IN WHITE (1988) Some good period feel, but I was disappointed in this often-praised ghost story. A few good scenes, but overall, characters didn't act believably most of the time, there were some really abrupt changes in tone, over-done (though competent low-budget) special effects in the climax, a very predictable mystery, etc. Good for kids, I guess, but a bit lacking for adult viewers. Too bad, since this was clearly a labor of love for director Frank Laloggia.

47. MURDER, HE SAYS (1945) Great mystery/comedy, starring Fred MacMurray, as a pollster who stumbles into the midst of the dreaded, homicidal Fleagle clan, headed by whip-cracking matriarch, Marjorie Main. Sort of like a hillbilly version of ARSENIC & OLD LACE, except better. Highest recommendation.

48. HOUSE OF MYSTERY (1961-British) Really cool little revenge story, wrapped in a ghost story, all told in about 53 minutes, sort of like a more supernaturally-inclined episode of THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR. Highly recommended.

49. EVIL DEAD II: DEAD BY DAWN (1987) Sam Raimi's comedy-horror rollercoster ride, putting Bruce Campbell through the wringer. Maximum entertainment. Highest recommendation.

50. INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956) The original, and still the best. Unlike many fans, I prefer it with the Whit Bissell/Richard Deacon post-production wraparound. Highest recommendation.

Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween! :emoji_thumbsup:

Sorry about the late final update, been spending most of the last couple of days catching up on some of the stuff around the house that got put off while I watched movies like mad in October :b

I had been planning on watching High Tension (third time that I have watched it, and it has actually gotten better!) as my final movie of the challenge, but I messed up on my count and wound up staying up late Monday watching Tom Savini's Night Of The Living Dead remake as my last film instead.

I managed to watch a few dozen new movies during the month, but other than Land Of The Dead (and a few others), not many of them are worth a second watch. Heck, some of them were not even worth a single watch! :D Hopefully I will be able to find some better new stuff for next year. :emoji_thumbsup:

We had another great year for the HTF Scary Movie Challenge. Not as good as last year, but I think last year was a lucky time for a lot of us (no work, out sick, etc). We had almost as many people break the 31 film mark this year as compared to last (15 compared to 16 last year) and a total of 21 compared to 26 in the 13 film category. Regardless of how we compared to last year, we were way above the historical average. A lot of films I saw for the first time this year will become re-watches come next October. Congratulations to all of you who had the stomach to complete the challenges. I hope to see everyone back next year (Scott and Justin, this means you).
