First off I am only choosing DVDs I myself personally own, and consider the best dvds of quality content and presentation I have viewed everything or nearly everything on. That's why you won't find Spartacus, Brazil, or The ultimate Toy box on my list, despite that they're my three most wanted dvds. and it's also why there's no Moulin Rouge, because I've yet to view or listen to a single extra from the dvd, just the movie is excellent enough, I don't really want to spoil it (and I don't really have the time).
on to a few of my somewhat unusual choices
Pollyanna is at number two because it is simply one of the finest dvds I've yet encountered. The presentation of the film is specutacular, but the extras really vault this dvd to the top. Pollyanna is a film I equate with It's a Wonderful Life most people have never seen either, and wrongfully assume that the film is all sugar and sweet saccarine goodness, well a single viewing of the bleakness of IAWL should dispel all those doubts, and this should happen for Pollyanna too, but it doesn't--perhaps because people don't really watch the film instead they immediately reject it, seeing only what the adults IN the film blindly see as well. Anyway I find the film haunting and compelling, and when people see it with an open mind I think that they discover the film is much more than they give it credit for. I certainly think that it rises above all other disney live action I've seen, including my childhood favorites (pollyanna did not rank among those!).
As to the extras, well they are varied and outstanding in quality. There is a superb retrospecitive documentary that give you outstanding appreciation for the film, it's not deep and detailed about the filmmaking process, but neither are this a flipant EPK it's a very well executed documentary. There are also several other things I can't begin to list, from little touches for the Disney fan (the Disney Studios 1960 featurrette for instance) and Walt's tv introductions; to things that range outside the actual film, such as the fascinating information on the Pollyanna book phenomenon, and the collectibility of Pollyanna Memorabilia, or all the radio archive material. And of course this also has the most fascinating, comprehensive, detailed, breathtaking, and educational restoration documentary yet made. The only thing I haven't listened to is the audio commentary, but if it's like some of the other commentaries of the VD series then it's probably about 70-30 new material to rehashed material (from other extras), the commentaries are excellent, and closely related to the film, but they aren't of the same outstanding caliber the rest of the extras are, but it is still very nice to have them available!
Grand Illusion - Because it's one of the finest films ever made (2nd best in my opinion), presented absolutely beautifully on dvd. the extras that are here are outstanding, the crown jewel is the best commentary I've yet heard (seven samurai is the second best), and an excellent restoration demonstration.
Lord of the Flies - I adore this film, I think it's one of the most astonishing adaptations yet created. I love the source material and really enjoy the movie almost as much, there are some constraints to the film, but those are related to budget and equipment--I can forgive that. The presentation on dvd is simply spectacular, with an utterly beautiful transer, and a jaw dropping plethora of extras. Once again I find the commentary to be among the best I've heard, it's extremely informative and very well edited, it deepens your appreciation for the film immensely, but without ruining the actual film itself with burdensome knowledge. The other extras are fascinating and detailed, my only complaint is that there is not more deleted footage available since so much was shot, but that is a very minor thing, especially considering the wealth of material already on the disc.
Empire of the Sun - it's my favorite film of all time, and it's given a very fine dvd. The film itself is what ranks this so high, the visual and auditory presentation are excellent to my eyes and ears, I see no flaws, I would prefer a dts track but that's not available as this is warners. There is an excellent documentary available on the other side that is informative, however I would have enjoyed some new material as well. That this is a double sided disc also brings its ranking down.
The Treasures series: Goofy and Symphonies are actually neck and neck, but I've watched most of the symphonies so I give it the edge. MM I really love, but theres not quite as a high a ratio of superb cartoons to merely passing cartoons found on the other sets, I just enjoyed the other two sets more (despite having several mickey/donald/goofy cartoons I prefer to many if not most of the cartoons on the other sets), still I've not yet come across a stinker to equal the Noah's Ark Silly Symphony, but that's the only cartoon I've really disliked. :)
