My father has a 5 year old JVC 27" CRT TV.
He just told me that the picture has recently started to become darker and darker.
He says he has to turn the brightness control all the way up to see the picture.
5 years doesn't seem to be a very old TV to me.
He will have it checked out by the retailer (Bleeker TV in Ottawa) but I need another opinion.
Is this the picture tube failing?
He bought it for $279 Cdn and I'd hate to have to tell him that he probably won't find another CRT in the city and that he's going to have to spend at least $600 for an LCD HD TV (26").
Thanks.

Five years is young for a CRT to fail in that way. But it happens. Ask around at work, with friends or CraigsList (or equivalent). I just discarded a working 27" CRT because no one wanted it. You may find a free replacement with little effort.

I think it's probably a goner.

But on the plus side, I've commonly seen 32" LCDs for ~$300. (Vizio and such. And I like my 37" bedroom Vizio just fine.) So he won't have to go to $600 unless he's looking for top of the line.

Thanks Al and Dave.
I was afraid of that...5 years does seem a little young.
At 85, my father is definitely not seeking a top-of-the-line unit.
I hadn't considered something like a Vizio but that might suit him just fine.
