A nit: we exploded the first H-bomb in 1952.

Good nit to pick! I went on Wiki and interpreted the page I found to read that H-bomb tests started in 1946:

"Between 1946 and 1958, 23 nuclear devices were detonated by the United States at seven test sites located on the reef, inside the atoll, in the air, or underwater."

I mistakenly read that to mean "H-bomb" but obviously it meant A-bombs as well.

Thanks for the correction - so now we can establish that the movie took place in 1952, which makes more sense than 1946! :wave-hello:

Those tests in Operation Crossroads were used to see how much damage a regular A-bomb would do to Navy ships. Old obsolete ships were used in the test area to see how well they survived.
