Evan for me. Close, but the clincher is probably the abolishment of slavery. Slavery was a human invention too, so the abolishment of slavery isn't really an achievement in my book.

Evan - there really wasn't a specific "abolishment" of slavery, it just took different forms. And I'm also not sure how valuable coffee is, but then, I've never had a cup in my life. I can't take the smell.

Evan, almost for the written word alone, which I think is going to be a formidable opponent against any of our lists.

I find it intriguing that my decision to include the abolishment of slavery seems to be the deciding factor for some of you in voting against me; and yet no mention is made of Evan's choice of the 1492 discovery of America - an event that proved catastrophic for the natives and led to the enslavement of thousands upon thousands of Africans. No, I'm not mad, just curious. :)

Steve, I hear ya on the slavery thing, but while I agree it's great slavery is almost gone, in my opinion it's not an achievement to correct a wrong. It's just how I feel on the subject, it's all very relative, that's why we vote :)

And while slavery was a factor, it was not the only one for me. Evan's list was overall stronger IMO with picks like Thomas Edison, the written word and the domestication of animals. And while I am a heavy coffee drinker, it's just a plant so it's not that great of an achievement to me ...

But someone had to come up with the idea of creating a beverage from it. An unheralded genius, whoever it was. :)

Hi, it's the crazy guy here to disrupt this wonderful thread again.

This part is to Steve: While I'm sure to get shut-out in my first match-up (Although my list is FAR superior to all others), it has to pain you that I will last a day longer than you, even with nothing but boobs and cheese for a list. And this whole shebang was your idea.

This part is to everyone else: Here is a nice little journey into the brian's head.

[brian's thoughts]
Let me see. Who to vote for? Let me breakdown this one down.

the abolishment of slavery...It still exists (at least Steve said something about it,,,third world..something, something) so I guess that one really doesn't count. CRAP!

air conditioning...oh man this one kicks ass. I love those days when it's all hot and crap outside, and then I hit that sweet whoosh of cool air. KUDOS!

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony...Oh man. I know this is famous or something, but I have no clue what it really is. CRAP!

coffee...oh yeah. A day without coffee is like a day without...uh..um...something really good. KUDOS!

the constructs of ancient Egypt (pyramids, statuary, etc.)...I guess they're cool, but I'd rather go to DIsneyland than Egypt. CRAP!

discovery of DNA...I don't really need to know why my eyes are brown and pinky toes are crooked. They just are. Besides, DNA isn't very catchy. Perhaps if they had called it...uh the mean green genes or something, it'd be much cooler. CRAP!

the Lewis and Clark expedition...They went from one side of land to the other.CRAP!

the theory of evolution...It's just a theory. And not all that great of one either. Had the theory been we were some kind of mutant offspring of an alien and a dinosaur or something, then I'm in. But this is not all that thought provoking.CRAP!

Now to Evan's...

collected works of Thomas Edison...I think he did the phonograph or something. We don't even use that anymore. CRAP!

comedy...This one is great! KUDOS!

discovery of America (1492)....Someone was bound to find it sooner or later. CRAP!

the domestication of animals...I love my dogs. KUDOS!

the moon landing...Aliens do it all the time. CRAP!

organized sports...RULES! Except for Nascar, which really isn't a sport anyway, so KUDOS!

the rise of bacteriology (discovery and study of microscopic pathogens)... I can't pronounce like four of those words. CRAP! by default

the written word (symbol/glyph/character/etc)...I guess without it, I wouldn't be able to waste all this bandwidth. KUDOS!

[/brian's thoughts]

So, it's four KUDOS from Evan to two from Steve. So, I vote Evan.

Taking a cue from Mr. Kissinger...

Vickie M:

computers - cool
control of electricity - cool
the internet - cool
mastery of the air/flying - cool
personal media (cds, dvds, etc.) - col
satellites - cool
the telephone - cool, except for those damned annoying cell ones

vs.

Brian Kissinger

beer/alcohol - cool (would never get a date otherwise)
breast implants - uncool (I like small ones)
cheerleaders - cool (though I couldn't get a date with one if I was the last man on earth)
cheese - cool (but it makes me fart)
edible underpants - cool (I guess)
haircuts - cool (as fast as my hair grows...)
1976 Cincinnati Reds - cool (and it'll never happen again)
pornography - cool (soothes my lonely, lonely nights)

Brian's penchant for big boobs proves to be his undoing.

Vickie gets the vote!

My last choice was The music of Kate Bush, which I guess got lost in the thingy crashy.

(Yes, it was just "Kate Bush" but "the music of" is what I meant.)

Brian's list made me go over and hug my husband, and tell him how much I love him. ;)

I'll give Brian props for alcohol, cheese, cheerleaders and porn. But I'm almost bald, I don't like fake boobs, I'm not too high on edible underwear and I'm certainly not a Reds fan. :D

So Vickie gets my vote

Funny thing is, I don't like the fake ones either. I was stretching for something, and it popped into my head. If I had one pick to take back, it would be that one.

And without further ado, here we go again:

computers...They are most awesome. A single thing that can deliver you hours of entertainment. Everything from knowledge, to entertainment and gaming, to porn, and friendship.KUDOS!

control of electricity...I openly admit (as if you folks haven't already figured it out) that I am not all that bright or educated of a guy. But was there a time when electricity was just running around rampant, pillaging the women and raping the fields? And control can be a deadly thing. CRAP!

the internet...See computersKUDOS!

mastery of the air/flying...I can't fly. CRAP!

personal media (cds, dvds, etc.)...Aside from LOTR, I'm mostly sure Vick's and my personal media are at opposite ends of the spectrum. CRAP!

satellites...I'm still afraid of them since Batteries Not Included. CRAP!

the telephone...Telemarketers, bill collectors, that crazy Aunt of yours calling all the time CRAP! Phone sex, calling off work, finding movie start times KUDOS!....Final Answer: OK

Even I know when to say when: VICKIE!
