Just saw this movie for the first time today and immediately thought that this could be the Carole King story! Has it ever been stated anywhere that the film was inspired by her life story? Opinions?

I seem to remember that this movie was inspired by Carole King and the whole Brill Building atmosphere. I'll have to check the documentary on the DVD to find out for sure, though.

It is loosely based, but fictional. Matt Dillon's character is also loosely based on Brian Wilson.
This is a great, over-looked movie & the DVD is stellar.
If you have Showtime, on Aug. 18 check out the debut of THINGS BEHIND THE SUN, which is the new film by Allison Anders, director of Grace of My Heart. It is also the story of a singer. It has received rave reviews since its premiere at Sundance, and I can't wait to see it! The always excellent Don Cheadle is in it.
