I'm starting a new official thread for this new streaming service "Max".

There are some glitches trying to link my account. As we suspected I'm not able to playback 4K movies in 4K. My plans states I'm ad-free, but doesn't give me any option to change my plan to view 4K movies in 4K. Anyhow, let the fun begin with this new streaming service. I'm not able to connect to HBO Max after I downloaded the new app "Max".

Update: On another 4KATV unit I was able to access and playback 4K/Dolby Vision movies on HBO Max. On this device I haven’t downloaded the new app for Max like I did with my other 4KATV unit. I might leave it that way for now until the glitches are resolved.

I am amazed and saddened about the moves being made by HBO to its streaming service.

First, the fact that the iconic HBO is being removed from the name of the service.

Secondly, another price tier is being added to gouge those who want 4k playback. However, nothing new as Netflix has been doing this for some time now.

By the way, the new Shazam movie is on Max in 4K/Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos, but it wouldn’t playback in 4K on my other ATV unit.

HBO Max doesn’t have the new Shazam movie.

It was broken on Roku until just about 30 minutes ago.

Also 4K HDR IS working on my legacy grandfathered in linear HBO Subcscriber account.

Well I guess we can't complain about the lack of 4k content on Max anymore. Turns out they were LITERALLY HOARDING IT ALL for the new price tier.

That said...I'm watching Succession right now. It looks HOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRIBLE in Dolby Vision. Maybe this wasn't the best idea.

That's a good question as I believe my HBO service is provided by Verizon

EDIT: I get HBO through Verizon Fios. I wonder if through their direct cable channel, I get the 4k experience but not through the app? This is a bit confusing.

That's pretty lame of them. Not like they started from scratch or anything remotely like that... to have all those issues (again) at (re)launch (again).

I haven't tried my ATV4K (nor my iPhone or iPad) just yet, but the web site version doesn't really look any different at all to me (other than maybe losing most of the prior HBO labeling).

Alright, I have confirmed that my issues with Max are equipment related. I'm not able to watch 4K/Dolby Vision programming on my 4KATV units. However, I'm able to stream 4K/Dolby Vision programming on my Roku Ultra units. Furthermore, on Roku they replaced HBO Max channel to Max channel. So there is no longer HBO Max on Roku. However, on ATV there are still two separate streaming services. HBO Max and Max which is probably the root of the issues there.

Yup, I'm getting 4K Dolby Vision on my Roku. Also, I'm getting Dolby Atmos on some programming. I've also noticed that some movies have the 4K/UHD designation, but don't have any HDR. Movies like LOA, The Bridge on the River Kwai and From Here to Eternity.

Movies such as the Lord of the Rings movies have 4K/Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos on not only the theatrical cuts, but also the extended versions. However, I did noticed at least one of the Hobbit movies in which only the theatrical cut has 4K/Dolby Vision while the extended version doesn't have any HDR.

my experience so far was on my macbook by opening the old HBOmax app & it switched automatically over. from what i previously read, this would happen, but when i opened the app on my ATV, the old app just opened.

as Mr. Crawford mentioned above, perhaps i’ll also leave it as is until some of the kinks are worked out.

did anyone find the ATV app enable the new Max on its own?

Yeah both HBO Max and Max seem to have their apps and websites still running. When I updated the app on my Galaxy 11 this morning it just kept it as HBO Max so I had to download Max separately.

Ok so far of what I've sampled, Succession's sickly yellow cast on the Dolby Vision encode is looking to be more of the exception than the rule. The light and dark gradients on My Brilliant Friend Season 2 really pop. Also tried Watchmen and it looked...not much different than it did 4 years ago. Very subtle with that Dolby Vision.
