Thanks Gregory. The Danish Dogville was better than the American release so I probably won't wait this time and just get it right away.

Are there any reviews in yet for New Yorker's Vidas Secas disc release 10th Jan?

And does anyone know the catalogue code for Artificial Eye's release of The Sun?

Just noticed that a Satyajit Ray gem is being released, this time in France:
The Branches of the Tree (Shakha Proshakha) - (Satyajit Ray - 1990) Vision Vidéo R2 France
French language title for it is Les Branches de l'arbre. According to DVDfr.com it's 1.85 anamorphic with (presumably) original audio and French and English subs.
Just as an aside, am I correct in thinking that the only Ray on DVD we have so far is the Apu Trilogy (R1 and R2), the now OOP French release of The Music Room and now Branches of the Tree? I've heard there are Indian DVDs of his work - are they a) legal and b) acceptable quality?

Thanks, Donald -- I'm very curious about the Home Vision release of Lovers of the Arctic Circle. I've been dying to see this again since the theatrical release, but have heard the present releases are of poor quality (and the R4 is FF!).

Wow - just as I was starting to wonder about Ray films on DVD, 3 come along! Potentially good news on the Medem - I'd love to be able to cast off my R2 UK Tartan disc!
Edit- it seems from the Image site that the Lovers of the Arctic Circle DVD will be 2.35:1 anamorphic whihc looks promising. Now let's what the image quality and subtitles will be like.

The picture quality of Home Vision's discs is typically very good, so I'm sure their edition of Lovers will surpass previous issues. Their foreign films are also well-translated and subtitled; no worries there.

It seems that Optimum have a new edition of La Haine coming out in the UK on 5th June 2006. No details on features as of yet - all I can make out is that it comes in a steel tin (ala Terminator 2 in the UK I imagine) - it's being called the Ultimate Edition though. I'd hope that the only thing that differentiates the ultimate edition from the existing special edition isn't the metal packaging!

Just got my Lovers of the Arctic Circle disc this morning. As expected, it is miles ahead of the Tartan for PQ, but sadly remains the poorest quality Medem disc I have. There is little or no obvious print damage but somehow the colours or encoding just aren't quite right - the forest scene where Otto el Pilotto is first introuced just looks wrong (I have a really awful 28" 4:3 set so I'll leave exact definition of what this is to someone else).

I'm not sad I bought it as it is still better than the Tartan by a long way, but given the maturity of DVD as a product now, I'd have expect better.
