Well, after what seems like 5 years of asking, New Yorker are finally getting around to releasing Patrice Toye's stunning Rosie on DVD. According to the person at New Yorker it will be most likely Q2 of 2006.

Although Toye has not made a feature film since, Rosie is (from memory at least) one of finest debuts I've seen. It never received UK distribution, and I only saw it because John Parish (one time PJ Harvey collaborator and Bristol, UK, resident) scored the film and lived locally to the cinema. If I had to describe it purely in terms of other films, this is Rosetta (Dardenne bros.) directed by Lukas Moodysson (so Lilya 4 Ever then...). I haven't seen it since 2000 so it difficult to compare it with Lilya fully (and Lilya is also one of my favourite films of all time).

When this film is released on DVD, I urge anyone who can to buy it!

Has anyone else here seen the film? My most enduring memory of it is that I would have shot the ending slightly differently.

Hearts and Minds (Peter Davis, 1974) Metrodome [R2-UK]

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

This still remains one of my most appreciated Criterion titles, although further investigation of this forthcoming title lists an interview and audio commentary created specifically for this release?

As the Criterion edition is a director approved transfer i'm certainly eager to hear of how this release will stack up against it.

Hey Gary,
I'm not sure whether you know or not, but there is Chaplin DVD box set available in France with all Essenay and Mutual Comedies. I bought the set two years ago and was pleased with the video quality, which varies quite a lot from one short to another.
http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...164927-3848163
It is a cooperation between Arté and Gaumont.
Though Amazon.fr lists the product at 56 euro, I found the set two years ago for 35 euro in a local store.

Hi Deiter !

Wow, I wasn't aware of this - thanks for telling me. I may have to nab that boxset to do a comparison.

Best,

Gary

Has anyone bought or seen a review of the Hong Kong DVD of Truffaut's Une belle fille comme moi? It's one of the two remaining films he solely directed not on DVD before I saw this version! The HK disc appears to be full screen only, but the Japanese disc (here ) is unclear to me (mainly as I can't read Japanese).

The OAR is 1.66:1 -- I own of the 4:3 DVDs (Spanish) and there is no doubt that it is in the wrong aspect ratio. Who owns the R1 rights -- is there any chance of someone like Criterion who won't screw it up getting a hold of Such a Gorgeous Kid Like Me?
FWIW, Truffaut has NEVER made a 1.33:1 feature film. All his features are either in 2.35:1 or 1.66:1

great - Veronique comes to DVD! Any details on the disc? Amazon.fr and the MK2 site don't seem to list it. Does it have English subs?
