Has anyone tried this new unit out from Dish Network? I'm thinking of dropping my Tivo for this unit as it doesn't have the monthly subscription costs.
I have it, but I'd trade it in a minute if Dish network ever offered a PVR with Tivo's functionality.
I would think that the Tivo would still be the better bargain for you. It would be cheaper for you to get a "lifetime" contract than purchase a new PVR unit that has even less functionality. And if your Tivo is the DirecTivo model, then you have even more to lose, as that model will soon offer 2 tuners.
Dish's PVR is basically a nice digital VCR. It has no search capabilities, a very slow guide, and limited timers.
Thanks for the heads up. I liked the Tivo for a while until the modem broke and now I have to manually plug in the phone line into the wall. I am so sick of having to pay a monthly fee for a program guide. I just want to be able to record my shows without a tape. Also the Tivo tends to be slow changing the channels on my Dish Network receiver, causing problems. There seems to be a promotion right now to get a free unit by signing a one year contract.
I have the PVR 501 for a few weeks now. I got it for free when I switched over to dish after 4 years with Direct TV. I Love it. I dont have the functionality of a TiVo unit but I also dont have those bills for them either. I also understand that Dish is working on upgrades to the software to offer other functions.
