A friend of mine asked me to post this question. He just bought the lord of the rings dvd and it has two sound options, "Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and Dolby Digital 2.0.

When he selects 5.1 ex, he gets sound effects, but no dialog. Now I know from experience that if you say select dts and your receiver does not do that you will get no sound, but it seems like with the DD 5.1ex the track would just get processed over the existing channels?

Let me know if you have any thoughts

I never thought about that, but I would think it should not have a problem. It sounds like his receiver is unable to decode the signal properly.

How is the player hooked to the receiver? Digital or analog?

Does he have a 5.1 speaker set up? If he only has 2 speakers, his receiver might not know what to do with the center channel's sound from the disc. What kind of DVD player is he using? The dialog in that movie is subpar at best anyway... J/K
