How can this place offer such low prices and pay for the shipping and make any money? Did these companies not learn the early grave lesson of other dot coms? I just ordered 5 DVDs from them because the deal was so good, but how can they afford to do that?

Please don't ask the really tough questions. At least let me get through the next couple of month's DVD releases with this great service intact! After I save money on all the stuff I need, then start asking!
Can you believe, I asked them to add to their stock and they did! I love them!

hah hah, yeah I know what you mean but reality has to come and hit you sometime. I got Point Break, 2 Muppet Movies and Cast Away pre-ordered. If they will honor those that pretty much satisfies me through 6/12. After that I figure they will either raise their prices or not exist.

Oh, I'm cringing! You guys are in on my secret DVD buying weapon now!
Don't order too much, cause next week I plan to make a big order -- save myself a bundle -- and I want some stock left.
My secret... It's out!

Heck, my Pearl Jam disc arrived a little late, which I didn't even notice, and they upped the shipping to Priority AND included a code for 10% off my next order! (different from the one that's been going around publicly.)
These guys rule!

whew! I spen an hour there the other day comparing prices and they do in fact (barring any coupons) have the lowest overall price I have been able to find. Just preordered about 7 titles through Jult 10 (yippee ki yay!!) I think the only one I want and haven't ordered is crouching Tiger, but I'll leave that one for my roomie to buy. I've heard good things about them, so I hope they come through.
First stop...The Pork Chop Express!!

I believe I read somewhere that these guys already have a very successfull B&M store, so they figure they can move more DVDs by selling them (on the web) to just break even....

i've used this retailer and i don't have any complaints. just keep in mind that if you go with the free shipping, it could take over 2 weeks to receive your order...
so unless you're in a hurry to get your DVD, you can't beat their prices!

No complaints from me either. If you use the free shipping, it'll take a week to 10 days to get the discs, but when I'm getting the "Prisoner" sets for under $20 and "X-Files" Season 3 for $64.80

I'm more than willing to wait a bit.
Customer service seems pretty good too. I had the Rocky box on pre-order and decided after the early reviews to cancel it. They don't have a simple on-line cancellation method like DVD Empire but an e-mail to their customer service address got a nearly immediate response and a confirmation of cancellation within 24 hours.
I now use DDD and DVD Empire pretty much exclusively.

Call me crazy, but their prices seem about 50 cents higher than Amazon on every pre-order title. Granted, this includes shipping, but Amazon probably works out to be significantly cheaper if you order several weeks' worth of pre-orders at once. (Those of you who shop at Amazon frequently likely know that even if you instruct Amazon to hold shipment until all titles are available, they will, at no extra cost, ship them as they become available anyway).
More to the point, you can't beat Amazon's customer service.

I just cancelled an order at Amazon of 9 DVDs at 30% off and free shipping because Deep Discount still came out cheaper on every title using their 10% off coupon.
I currently have another order at Amazon with 5 titles available now, but waiting for three more to be released next week to complete it. And not a single item has shipped early that is available. I have placed many orders at Amazon and only a very few times were available items shipped before the entire order was complete.
I never have thought that Amazon's customer service was that great. I have had several problems that were an absolute nightmare to resolve. They took several phone calls, and quite a bit of time and arguing with order specialists to fix. I think there are several other stores whose customer service is far better than Amazon's. I used them because they do have a well designed website, the past history of getting free gift certificates, and they are reliable in shipping orders. But they keep raising the prices of DVDs and gift certificates are far fewer, so I will give other stores a chance for my business instead.

How good are they at meeting street dates though? I pre-ordered 7 titles from them, the first being Big Trouble In Little China and I have yet to get it. I paid extra for Priority Mail. I would assume they'd ship as each one was released...if they don't i'll be waiting until July to get my order.

I got my BTiLC on the 25th using their standard delivery option - it shipped on the 17th. I still haven't received by Dr. Strangelove disc yet, though it was listed as in stock when I ordered it two weeks ago.

Why is virtually every new title listed as "out of stock"? I was checking films like "Traffic" and "Close Encounters" yesterday -- with a street date of tomorrow, surely they should have had their stock in a while back! I looked up "Big Trouble in Little China" since Calvin just received it, but that is also listed as "out of stock"! Nice prices, but if they are not even in stock by the release date, it portends a LONG wait!
