I would like to add that, depending on the disc, sometimes you can enjoy the benefits of higher resolution stereo sound if you don't have a DVD-A player. A good DVD-A disc should have a non-MLP compressed stereo 96/24 stereo track.

No, that's all it is. However, inside the receiver, often input signals are digitized for bass management, tone controls, DSPs etc. If your receiver has a "Source Direct" button it's probably got an analog pass-through for stereo sources. The only way to know for sure is to contact the receiver manufacturer and ask them.
