My 4? year old Sony BDP-S550 has started having problems with freezing up during playback. Sometimes I can skip to the next chapter, other times not. Sometimes the timer keeps going and it will eventually resume playing, but other times my only option is to eject the disc and chapter skip to ahead of where it freezes. Sometimes it freezes numerous times during a movie, basically making the movie unwatchable.
Sometimes there will be scratches on the disk that are clearly responsible for problems, but other times it happens with disks that look spotless.
Firmware is up-to-date.
I'm suspecting the player is just going bad and needs to be replaced, but would appreciate any suggestions to remedy the problem.
If it needs replacing, I'd appreciate recommendations. I have a Roku so don't need smart/streaming capabilities, or wifi. Bluray is becoming a less significant proportion of my movie viewing so I don't want to spend a lot of money, and am not concerned about having anything fancy -- just something to allow me to watch 2-3 blurays a week without all the freezing up hassle. Thanks!
EDIT to include make/model
