You should mention James Wong Howe's stunning cinematography, which is the film's high point. I wish the direction were more jazzy but I love Lemmon's impish warlock, especially his intro in the Zodiac Club. The film's subtext is the usual 50's pablum - be dull and conform but there's still some subversion.
