The Google TV version of "King and I" is a 16x9 cropped image, while the Apple version is in full scope. In addition the Apple version has near perfect color, while Google's version exhibits the color problems of "Color by Deluxe" films of the 50's.
Why would the Studios send out dramatically different masters? Both versions were available before Disney's involvement with Fox.

I don't think I've seen a 1.85 film that was presented at 2.35-2.39 on TV (although I've seen widescreen films at 1.78), but maybe I was just unaware.
The "Director's Cut" of Rocky IV is now 2.35:1 while it was originally shown at 1.85:1. This was an artistic choice which I guess is different from a wrong version being distributed.
Why would the Studios send out dramatically different masters?
Because the idea of having one consistent, high quality master sent to all of the providers seems to be beyond the studios.
