What a shame. There's LOTS of material left from that film sitting in storage boxes, including the single most important scene David Fincher fought to the last breath to keep in the film, but wasn't able to. That being Ripley's final struggle with Bishop at the end of the film, an incredible acting moment for Sigourney. A 40+ second shot of Ripley's emotional torment deciding between turning herself over to Bishop, or sacrificing herself and the Alien within. It's the emotional climax of the entire *trilogy* and (for people who don't really care for Resurrection) the character Ripley. All she's fought for in the first three films comes down to that single moment, and Fincher has always said if there was one single scene he wish was still in the final cut, that was it. It was in the Workprint the SE was based off, too!

It's disappointing such a simple addition couldn't be made. Would have made a near-flawless Special Edition, if they were truly trying to release a version of the film 'as close to Fincher's original vision as possible.' So why is it missing the one scene he lamented losing more than any other? As far as I know, it's the only deleted scene he's discussed openly, so it must have had significance for him. Even as a bonus on the 5th or 6th discs would have been a really nice gesture for fans buying these films for the 3rd or 4th time.

Great post crumbs - I completely agree with everything you have said :) How that 40 second scene never made the 2003 Assembly Cut is just beyond me. It is without doubt the most important scene of the whole film - shamelessly left on the cutting room floor in 1992 thanks to a group of studio execs who thought they knew better. The entire film builds to that one moment alone, and I can see why Fincher fought so strongly for it's inclusion. It's a scene that really needs to be reinstated to it's rightful place imho.

This may well be just wishful thinking on my part, but hopefully some of the deleted material that never made the 2003 Assembly Cut will appear in the new Wreckage & Rage doc on the 5th disc. I believe this version has an additional hour of footage that never made it onto the edited Quad version, so there maybe hope yet. In addition, there are the Enhancement Pods on disc 5, and I believe these have a total running time of an hour for the Alien 3 related ones. It really will be such a shame if the deleted material doesn't show up on this new set in one form or another.

Also, Elliott Goldenthal discussed in the doco that he scored the original ending, and then had to come back months later to re-score the newly filmed finale. So why did the original ending on the Special Edition contain a (frankly awfully) truncated version of the re-written finale cue? Couldn't the original score recordings be found? Hopefully that's been adjusted for the BR, if they went to the trouble to re-do some of that bad ADR with the original actors.

Yeah I'd agree that including the Ripley long pause was essential, considering Fincher's strong wishes back in the day. Makes me wonder why it wasn't even on the Assembley Cut to begin with, if that's the earliest cut of the film Charles and his team found... before the later reshoots took place.

What the...

Never heard of it. Looks like Alien vs. GI Joe (80s Joe)

I am sure that would of gone over as well as soft porn on Saturday mornings.

Now i could totally love an anime Alien series. But anime is rarely anything like what is on Saturday morning, in the States!

Oh, I remember that. I believe it was the toys that came out first with short mini-comics for every figure. The depiction of the characters were quite funny. For instance, Ripley, Apone and Drake had bio cards with different actors on them, while the Hicks card used an actual screenshot from ALIENS of Michael Biehn as Hicks. Funny since his figure was the closest thing the marines wore.

I loved the Ripley figure the best. She had this big flame thrower that attached to a satchel and when you rotated her waist, the flame inside the thrower would come out. Unfortunately since her arms were posed to only hole the flame thrower, putting her in the Power Loader (Which worked on treads, not legs) was impossible.

The Bishop figure was by far the most outrageous figure to not reflect the movie counterpart. He's bald with metal plates over his head, wearing sunglasses, and his weapon is a freaking GATTLING GUN complete with ammo belt! What's best is that you can disassemble both sides of his upper torso area to show only his spine area holding his head in the air. This is where it gets freaky. You can actually attach the gattling gun directly to his spine where the connection for his torso is located. They actually use that image for the cover to his comic! Talk about over kill for a character who literally didn't even bring a pistol with him on his solo trip outside the complex.

I would so take these figures, put them on a rotating stand and shoot them with an HD camera from all sorts of different angles. Complete with their TV spots and even their mini-comics. Heck, how about a video of us just playing with them? Remember how the original Artisan Rambo Collection came with that?

If you want to see Ellen Ripley wage war with some aliens in high definition, then you just may get your chance this year. Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 are being developed for Blu-ray.

We discovered that Fox Home Entertainment is currently working on brand new Blu-ray releases for Alien, Aliens and Alien 3. Each film is said to be released in a new special edition set with brand new special features made just for these releases!

The site is also reporting that they haven't learned of a potential release date as of yet. We'll certainly keep you posted on these new BD releases as soon as we have more information.

The gentleman who originally posted the screencaps also posted the approximate running times for "Wreckage and Rage" on the Blu-Ray.com forum:

Development Hell: Concluding the Story (17mins 42secs)
Tales of the Wooden Planet: Vincent Ward's Vision (13mins 11secs)
Stasis Interrupted: David Fincher's Vision (14mins 13secs)
Xeno-Erotic: HR Giger's Redesign (10mins 20secs)
The Colour of Blood: Pinewood Studios, 1991 (23mins 42secs)
Adaptive Organism: Creature Design (20mins 58secs)
The Downward Spiral: Creative Differences (14mins 55secs)
Optical Fury: Visual Effects (24mins 04secs)
Where the Sun Burns Cold: Fox Studios, LA, 1992 (17mins 33secs)
Requiem for a Scream: Music, Editing and Sound (14mins 53secs)
Post-Mortem: Reaction to the Film (8mins 24secs)

Someone else determined that the difference in running time between this version and the edited version was 21:15.

However, I was under the impression that the documentary was 30 minutes longer IN ADDITION TO what was cut the first time around. I cite these two quotes...

The Digital Bits: "Not only is Wreckage and Rage: Making Alien³ the uncut and restored version of the documentary - originally titled Wreckage and Rape - that was edited for the Alien Quadrilogy DVD release, an additional 30 minutes of ALL NEW material has been added to this documentary as well."

And Mr. Lauzirika interviewed by Home Media Magazine: "“Time heals wounds,” de Lauzirika said. Now called “Wreckage and Rage,” the documentary comes with new footage de Lauzirika said he added in case the studio wanted to censor it again. “But they didn’t cut anything,” he said."

I realize this is picking nits (who, us?!) but I'd hate to think the Fox lawyers stepped in at the last minute again.

Good points Scott. I wish we could get some clarification on the issues raised! Maybe a lot of the extra new material are for the "Enhancement Pod" features?

Richard E. Grant's original screen test for Clemens. He didn't get the part, but he auditioned.

Also, the video quality looks incredible. Seriously, Aliens looks like it was shot yesterday.

As Alex said.

Fincher is said to be a huge fan of the cult Brit flick Withnail & I, which stared Paul McGann, Ralph Brown and Richard E. Grant. It is said that Fincher was keen to reunite all 3 actors for Alien 3. Grant auditioned for the Clemens role, but eventually turned the part down. I had no idea Grant got as far as camera tests for the role, so this should be another fascinating insight into the troubled production of Alien 3.
