Valentino may seem strange to those unacquainted with the stylized bio-pics from the mind of Ken Russell.
Part bio, and part dreamscape of 1920s Hollywood. Never real, always on edge.
The film is beautifully shot by Peter Suschitzky, with a color palette that seems never-ending, and production design that's typical of Mr. Russell. In short, the makings of a gorgeous Blu-ray.
Everything is in place, inclusive of the typical bits of MGM trademark minus density. Not problematic, but just there, in an era when the problem is easily handled.
For those uneducated in the ways of Russell, I suggest a bit of coursework, beginning with the BBC release of Ken Russell at the BBC, available as a DVD.
It includes some incredible early work including The Debussy Film, Dante's Inferno, Isadora: The Biggest Dancer in the World and Song of Summer.
