While some viewers may immediately have Freaky Friday come to mind when considering the latest body/mind swap productions, the earliest that came to me was Turnabout (1940). I'm sure there was also something in Shakespeare.

Over the decades, numerous films have dealt with the phenomenon and in differing ways.

But with Christopher Landon's 2020 Freaky, brought to us by Universal via Scream Factory, we get something a bit different.

Think 13 Going on 30, or in a bit more serious tone, Face/Off neatly placed in a blender with Joe Berlinger's latest and greatest.

In Freaky, Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton (Happy Birthday - 26 today) are the subjects, and the film turns out to be a far more pleasurable exercise in the thriller/horror/romance/sci-fi/comedy genre that might be expected.

It was actually 102 minutes of fun, especially with the two leads reversing roles. Think Vince Vaughn - all 6' 5" of him playing a 17 year-old girl.

As a 4k UHD product, it's also a hit. Shot with an Arri Alexa Mini in 2.8 and finished as a 4k DI, it's beautiful current Universal tech all the way, and shines projected on a large screen.

Audio is full and rich with enough shock hits on the track to keep one awake.

Image – 5 (HDR)

Audio – 5 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

Pass / Fail – Pass

Plays nicely with projectors - Yes

Makes use of and works well in 4k - 4.5

Upgrade from Blu-ray - Yes

Highly Recommended

Saw a preview screening of this and had a lot of fun. While the Happy Death Day two-fer is my personal favorite, Landon's making some interesting popcorn flicks based on taking a non-horror premise and throwing it into a horror film with a liberal sprinkling of comedy.

I didn't see this in theaters since Covid was really spiking in my area at the time of its release but I had a ton of fun with it on Blu-ray. It's very violent but the violence is so over the top that it's amusing.

Fun fact: the working title was Freaky Friday the 13th.

I love this movie. The core 4 actors are absolutely fantastic, and Vince Vaughn hasn't been this funny since Wedding Crashers.
