If you spend time on places like this board, it wasn't. I can absolutely understand why someone who maybe only saw the trailer and likes the original film but didn't do a lot of research before going to the movie would be surprised by this and I think they would be justified in being annoyed. I love musicals, but deceiving the audience is not a good strategy.

But if these people are "online" enough to complain online, then they shoulda been "online" enough to know what to expect.

-59% seems like a steep drop for Mean Girls. It does seem like the word of mouth is not the best. However, the budget was reasonable so it will probably still end up being profitable. It was originally intended to go directly to Paramount+, so whatever money they get in theaters is more than it would have made if it had bypassed theaters.

On the other hand, -24% is another very good hold for Anyone But You. I caught up with that this weekend after being sick when it first came out. I thought it was really fun. I was the only person at my screening. I didn't buy the theater out to do that; it just happened. But based on its gross, other audiences were turning up for it somewhere else

This weekend's returns/expansions, presumably based on Oscar noms and lack of any big new films:

Poor ThingsSearchlight Pictures
+890
American FictionAmazon Studios
+852
The HoldoversFocus Features
+1,140
OppenheimerUniversal Pictures
+1,008
Killers of the Flower MoonParamount Pictures

Thanksgiving must be due to lack of any current horror titles other than the fading Night Swim.

My local arthouse added The Zone of Interest and Past Lives. This is good since I haven't seen these yet.

Wow -- the margin between Mean Girls at #2 and The Beekeeper at #1 is razor thin. Those could potentially swap places tomorrow when the actuals for Sunday come in.

-11% is another great hold for Anyone But You. I saw it last weekend and it is a really fun movie, so I am glad to see it doing well. I would not initially have expected it to outgross The Color Purple among Christmastime releases, but here we are.

That being said, when you've got two movies at $7 million topping the chart, yikes. I doubt I would have much reason be happy this weekend if I owned a theater.

I didn't go to anything this weekend. I would go see Sometimes I Think About Dying if I could but neither of the two (!) theaters listed as showing it are around here. I wonder how far it will expand.

Migration has managed to leg it out past $100 million domestic (over $200 million worldwide). Illumination manages to make their animated films at a reasonable cost (usually around $75 million), so it should end up profitable. Plus I saw several trailers for Despicable Me 4 during football, so that will be a huge film for them coming up.

Final numbers seem to show Mean Girls at #1 as a good share of the action-movie audience was distracted by yesterday's NFL playoffs with The Beekeeper having a higher Sat to Sun drop.

Fathom has done theatrical screenings for episodes of this series before that have done very well so it may be tying itself.

Even though Fathom is distributing The Chosen, it has a number of screenings that are comparable to other new release films. So I don't think that is an apples-to-apples comparison with the limited number of screenings that they normally do for old movies, operas, etc.

These are the Top 10 Fathom grosses. The current release of The Chosen certainly has an opportunity to top the list though these tend to fall off quickly, with the release in November 2022 starting over $8 million, but topping out at $14.6 million total. Most of the target audience seems to rush out on opening weekend.

Isn't The Chosen playing different episodes each week too?
I checked and it looks like it will change every other week. This is episodes 4-6 will start February 15. Episodes 7 and 8 start February 29. (I looked this up.). They have shown certain episodes before, but I think this is the first time they have decided to screen an entire season theatrically. It will be interesting to see if there is a falloff in grosses for the subsequent episodes or if they all perform similarly to this.

I have no interest in the series at all, but if it helps drive traffic to theaters during this slow period for major studio releases, that is a good thing.
