Just saw a very nice 35mm print of THE AGE OF INNOCENCE last week, with Scorsese in attendance, and was reminded again of what an utter masterpiece this film is and, of course, how much I'd like to own a Blu-ray edition of it. Has an HD version shown up on any of the cable channels? I'd...
Make of this what you will, but last night at Film Forum, I overheard a FF regular, who consults for Criterion, report to his seat mate that the Criterion folks told him (earlier that afternoon) that they have secured rights to RED RIVER. Because of the relatively tight-knit nature of the New...
I'm thinking of picking up the Best Picture Collection as part of the Fox/MGM "Buy 1, Get 1 Free" sale at DD and DVD Planet so that I can finally pick up Sunrise. However, I already own All About Eve and How Green Was My Valley and would like to unload these. Do the individual movies come...
According to William Friedkin, speaking at a special screening of Cruising, Universal will be releasing a 30th Anniversary Edition of Sorcerer although it seems time is running out for the disc to actually come out by year's end. The director also says that his The Boys in the Band is also in...
So I just sold a VHS copy of this film (released by CBS/Fox) on eBay for much more than I expected to get for it. It is an entertaining Westerner goes East action tale directed by John Frankenheimer and co-written by John Sayles. It stars Scott Glenn and Toshiro Mifune and would make for a neat...
I recently recorded a broadcast of Charley Varrick off of TCM with my new DVD recorder. Lo and behold, Universal provided a letterboxed print of the film. I know this has been discussed here, but why would Universal go the full nine yards for a cable showing, but drop the ball for the DVD...
With all the discussion about the Midnight Movies series from MGM/Sony, I thought this story was applicable. I'm in the midst of a series I programmed on lesser known films of the 60s-70s American New Wave. We just screened Paul Williams' The Revolutionary, a 1970 UA film starring a young Jon...
These films were part of Universal's "youth division" movies which existed briefly, in the wake of Easy Rider's success. While Universal licensed other films from this group (Two-Lane Blacktop, Minnie and Moskowitz) to Anchor Bay, Milos Forman's first American film Taking Off, as well as Frank...
Caught an episode of this cult 80s sitcom a few years ago on TVLand and was hooked. It looks to be an Embassy title with Columbia involved in distribution--something tells me this is not a good thing. With all things New Wave '80s being in, I'd think this might have some retro appeal. On top...
I don't know if there has been a thread like this in the past or if this belongs in the TV Shows forum, but it seems to make more sense here. In several other recent threads people have made cases for made-for-tv films on DVD. Here are several I would very much like to see on the DVD format...
Here's one I was shocked to see was released. I completely missed any pre-release news on this one. Solid, mostly forgotten effort from director Lamont Johnson. Dave Kehr and DVD Savant have nice write-ups for this budget-priced release. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/21/mo...deo/21dvd.html...
What's the good word on these two new catalog releases, both coincidentally, co-starring one Craig Wasson? And, whatever did happen to Mr. Wasson, who was quite good in these films as well as several others of the early 80s?
The First Season was released in 9/04. The Second Season in 4/05. Anyone have sales figures on these sets? If they've sold well, perhaps we might see Season 3 in November...there was about a seven month gap in between the first two so I'm optimistically speculating.
This Anchor Bay/Miramax disc seems to have gone out-of-print. Unfortunately, it is the one disc I loaned out to a friend which was never returned to me. I've moved away and it does not seem I will be getting this one back anytime soon. I'm guessing Anchor Bay's license ran out on this title so...
Something tells me this will show up as one of those Universal Studio Classics budget releases. It was originally released by Universal Classics, the first time the studios experimented with foreign/indie offshoot labels (remember United Artists Classics and Columbia's dalliance with Gaumont?)...
I don't know if there's been any mention of this article on the boards, but I thought it was worth a mention. Laurent Bouzereau gets considerable ink: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/03/movies/03moer.html
Caught this dark 1954 film on the Encore Westerns channel last weekend. Directed by Alfred L. Werker and starring the underrated Dana Andrews and Donna Reed, it's taut and hardnosed with a pretty good mystery. Andrews, wrongly accused of murder, escapes from a lynch mob and returns years later...
Just saw a print at Film Forum. Loved it. Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea go out in very high style. What is the latest status from WB? I need this in my collection.
Stumbled upon 1973's winning teen romance Jeremy and the 1984 Karen Allen vehicle Until September while browsing the Best Buy racks. I had no idea these had or were coming out. Has anyone looked at the discs? I know Jeremy has both 16x9 and fullscreen transfers while Until September has only a...
Reading the new Sean Penn biography, I was pleased to see Harry Dean Stanton cite this modern crime classic as part of a story he was recounting. For those who haven't seen Straight Time, Dustin Hoffman in a gem of a performance as paroled thief Max Dembo, adds to his most impressive gallery of...
Very excited to hear the announcement for Season Two. I know we don't even have a definite release date yet (March?), but I sure hope we get some extras, in the form of interviews, featurettes, or commentaries, along with the episodes this time. I would prefer this to bonus episodes from other...
According to a fan website, as well as a thread on DVD Talk, it looks like a Warriors SE is in the works. At a recent screening of the film at the Egyptian in LA, Hill spoke to the audience and reported recording an interview for an upcoming DVD edition of the film. He also supposedly wants to...
Movies Unlimited lists the Phoebe Cates/Willie Aames cable favorite Paradise as being released on 12/21/04. The list price is pretty hefty (24.99) and no other features are listed. Has anyone heard anything about this? There is a Japanese disc, tho it censors some of the nudity...Willie's...
According to RottenTomatoes.com the new Racing With the Moon disc will not be barebones. The disc will include a commentary from director Richard Benjamin, as well as three featurettes on the making of the film. The film will presented OAR with both Stereo and 5.1 sound options. Here is the...
