My uncle's favorite movie of all time is Two Lane Blacktop. My aunt bought him the Limited Edition Tin a few years ago. I hope she didn't pay the astronomical prices it is going for now.
I think the most I ever got for a DVD was when I sold the AB edition of this a couple years back for $50. I understand its going for even more now.
Had an interest in seeing this again. It didn't set my world on fire the first time I saw it, but it definitely has a way of staying with you and getting under your skin. Great news.
Never put off til tomorrow what you can buy today. I've been trying to get my hands on the Anchor Bay edition without breaking the bank ... so a Criterion edition would be most welcome, and much-deserved. Criterion says nothing about it on their website. Not yet anyhow. So we may be in for a long wait.
Monte Hellman's twin western masterpieces, RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND and THE SHOOTING (both 1965), nicely restored and supplemented by VCI, are also out of print now and overdue for a re-release on DVD.
TWO-LANE BLACKTOP Drag racing east from L.A. in a souped-up ’55 Chevy are the wayward Driver and Mechanic (singer/songwriter James Taylor and the Beach Boys’ Dennis Wilson, in their only acting roles), accompanied by a tagalong Girl (Laurie Bird). Along the way, they meet Warren Oates’s Pontiac GTO-driving wanderer and challenge him to a cross-country race—the prize: their cars’ pink slips. Yet no summary can do justice to the existential punch of Two-Lane Blacktop. Maverick director Monte Hellman’s stripped-down narrative, gorgeous widescreen compositions, and sophisticated look at American male obsession make this one of the artistic high points of 1970s cinema, and possibly the greatest road movie ever made.

I like James Taylor & Dennis Wilson, as musicians. The idea of them having lead roles in a movie was not promising for me. That's probably the main reason I waited about 34 years to see Two-Lane Blacktop (1971). I was in error...it's a damn fine film.

So you're saying you were Lost all those years? Damn Dharma Initiative.
There will actually be a theatrical screening of Two-Lane Blacktop in Miami Beach this Thursday. Hellman will do an interview via Skype afterwards too. Anyone here live in the area? This will be a special opportunity. I actually did an interview with him in advance of the screening that connects Two-Lane a bit with his new movie, Road to Nowhere:
Were there any different extras on the tin edition of Two Lane Blacktop, compared to the Criterion release?
Have checked out the IMDb page for Road to Nowhere (2010),. The film's synopsis does sound good, and having Shannyn Sossamon and Cliff De Young in the cast is promising.
