The Disclaimer

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in…as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don’t get paid for this, and I don’t have the time to list every DVD. So, please don’t complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Not a thing here unless there's some kind of sale we don't know about yet. I've been adding discs like a drunk sailor for the last month and need to calm down a bit.

Thanks Mike!!

Thanks Mike! Interesting to see Modern Family still only releasing on DVD vs. BD. I stopped watching the show right around the time they made that decision and all these years later...still curious why that decision was made.

I hear you on that. Even when I said I wasn't going to get any new discs this week, I ended up getting two more from the Twilight Time sale.

Why would you stop watching a show because it doesn't get a Blu-ray release? The television broadcasts were still In HD. I think it's fairly clear that (then) Fox and (now) Disney believed that Blu-ray releases would not sell in a significant enough number to make them financially viable to produce. But I still enjoyed watching the show on television.

So one didn’t impact the other as much as my statement implied. I was losing interest but still buying the discs because of OCD or FOMO. But when they stopped releasing it I simply lost interest.

My comment was more directed at why bother to release DVD only at all? It’s not significantly cheaper than BD anymore. And since as you mentioned the show is natively shot in HD it really makes no little to do one and not the other.

if they stopped physical media altogether and just said “stream it because physical media is a loss for us” then I’d get it.

I have signed up to review several items on this week's list, but nothing has arrived as of yet. Hopefully, they will come as they're fine films that deserve coverage.

Thanks for the RoundUp, Mike!

That would be nice. But I feel like if they were going to do that, it would have come out simultaneously with the final season on DVD.

Shout Factory didn't release seasons 1-3 of The Good Place on Blu-ray during their initial run, but the complete series debuted on Blu-ray simultaneously with the season 4 DVD release a couple weeks back.

A complete series set of Modern Family is a no-brainer. I can't imagine why one wasn't announced for the same week as the release of the ultimate season.

But I've just got this nagging feeling that whenever one is announced, there WILL be a Blu version...which will be a real stick-in-the-eye to those who faithfully purchased the last several seasons on DVD.

The Middle (which is admittedly owned by Warner, not Fox/Disney, but aired as a companion to Modern Family for the majority of its run) never got a Blu-ray releasee. If it did do a Blu release for The Middle, I would buy one, but all they did was put out DVDs, the latter seasons of which moved over to Warner Archive. I agree that a Blu set of Modern Family makes sense, but if they weren't going to do it now, there's not really an opportune time down the line. I feel like it's more likely that they'll just dump them all on Disney+ sometime and call it a day.

That being said, you might like this book, which came out recently. I haven't gotten it yet because I'm hoping the price might go down, but it definitely seems like something that fans will enjoy:

A lot of television series are released DVD only. This is nothing new. Even series that have had blu releases sometimes drop them for DVD only. I was looking for sets of The Originals. Seasons 1-4 were released on blu-ray, but the final Season 5 was released on DVD only. So those that bought seasons 1-4 on blu have the choice of either buying the final season on inferior DVD or going without.

And again, my main question is: why even bother with a DVD only release? DVD and BD pressing costs are pennies apart. The infrastructure is there and in place. And if these shows are originally filmed in HD, the mastering is not cost-prohibitive either.

Like I said, if the stance is "physical media sales are not worth it, we're going streaming" ... well I won't like it but I'll at least understand it. But to say we'll spend enough to make DVD sets, but not BD sets is what's confusing to me.

I get that each company has bean counters that keep track of these things, and maybe there's good data to support the logic behind all these DVD only releases of TV series that are natively shot in HD. I'd love to see those figures though, just to satisfy my own curiosity.

And, in just the last month, I've purchased Blu-ray sets of the complete series of 30 Rock, The Good Place and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. So SOMEBODY thinks there is a market for these things.

Universal still licenses their TV shows out but as far as I remember, Fox hasn't licensed any of their TV shows and I don't think they've done their own Blu-ray release of a TV show in a few years now. Most of Fox's TV shows are MOD DVDs now.
