Great review! I hope your are correct on the video review vs highdefdigest which gave it 4 out of 5 stars and mentioned overblown contrast levels and inconsistent depth of picture. I'm truly hoping your review is the accurate one I have both formats but tend to side with the VC1 transfers of hd dvd and just want BluRay to at least equal the transfers on the other format. Can't wait til' next week to find out and post back here myself!
I'd have to disagree with that review... Peter is an excellent reviewer, but he has shown that he often-times can't get past stylistic choices in how certain films are shot. What I look for in a great transfer is in how close the video presentation is to the theatrical experience. In the case of Casino Royal, it is perfect.
Sounds damn good to me then! I'm counting the days til next tuesday. Thanks again for the review. Oh, and I can't wait to hear that uncompressed PCM track on my Panny BD10. I'm sure it'll be mindblowing.
Also worth noting, this is the first Blu-ray release to actually feature a Blu-ray player and disc in a scene from the movie. When Bond is checking out the security videos in the hotel in the Bahamas, he uses a Sony BDP-S1 to play back a security camera recording. The disc even has a prominent Blu-ray logo on it!
This is why I went blu!!!! Uggghhh, I can't believe I have to wait another whole week to experience this. I can't remember the last time I was this excited...
This blu-ray title is as good as purchased on release day. Nice review Ben, I am really looking forward to seeing this title on blu-ray. I was only able to buy about 1/2 of the 007 movies on SD-DVD before they stopped selling them awhile back. And I decided that I would not buy the new sets because of HD and it was not worth it financially to double dip that many titles. So even whithout buying the SD sets buying 21 007 movies in HD are going to be exspesive.
Its going to be great having Casino Royale on HD blu-ray and hope that MGM studios will offer the other Bond movies soon. I know since I do not have Moonraker at all how about that 007 title on blu-ray next? HD is the main reason I did not repurchase the SD set, dam the next few years are going to be exspensive!
Great review Ben, unfortunately I do not have either a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player as of yet, but Ill still enjoy the film on regular DVD anyway.
I saw this film twice in theaters and loved it each time, in many ways Casino Royale did for Bond what Batman Begins did for the Dark Knight. Althougth I must admit, I found Casino Royale to be more enjoyable.
As much as I love Casino Royale, I can't help but think, this is the James Bond that Timothy Dalton wanted to give the public a long time ago, but many weren't ready for it.
I'm inclined to agree with you, Corey... the main difference, is that that Dalton didn't have material anywhere near this quality to work with. It sure doesn't hurt that this is one of the best written Bond stories ever filmed.
I think for most of us who are already into Blu-ray, this is the disc we've been waiting for. Reading your review only makes me all the more impatient to get it. WIll check back next week with comments after I've had a chance to sample the goods.
My wife and I have been counting the days until release. Can't wait to check it out again. We saw it twice in theaters...I can't remember my wife ever wanting to go back and see a film. She adored this, and I did too. We saw it the day I picked up my PS3/the day it opened, on another note
