Is it appropriate to wear an undershirt with a tuxedo? Tank style or short sleeves? I've always worn a tank-style undershirt when I've worn a tux. Last time though, it was hot as hell at the reception and I perspired quite a bit. Wondered if a shirt with short sleeves would do better at absorbing perspiration. Would it be a fashion faux pas?

It is if you sweat a lot. If you are wearing a tuxedo you are most likely wearing a tie and if that is the case they wouldnt see if you had an undershirt on anyways. I say go with what is most comfortable to you since you are the one that has to wear the outfit and will also probably be the only one that will know you have an undershirt on.

I htink I can safely answer this as I wear a tuxedo on a daily basis.

Since some tux shirts are thin, you can actually see skin tones under them. In a situation like this, it is very appropriate to wear an undershirt. I have several different kinds of tux shirts ranging from very thin and light to thick and heavy/hot. Some people I work with wear tank tops under their tux shirts, but I find a good t-shirt works best for taking care of unwanted perspiration. Basically all you have to keep in mind is: white becomes transparent when it gets wet. If you have tattoos on your upper arms (like I do) you will most definately want to cover this up if you are not wearing a jacket.

Definitely a full undershirt.

I was in an wedding last week which was held outside, at high-noon, without a tent, and in sweet Ga humidity.

Without the the T, I would not have been able to take my jacket off.

While I was at the mall today, I popped into Tuxedo Junction and the guy told me that you're not supposed to wear anything under the tux shirt/no vest. He said to wear an "A-Shirt" if there is a vest.

I'm not sure the term "wife beater" is very PC. At the very least, it's a term used in decidedly bad taste. I decided to stick with my regular "tank-style" undershirts. Thanks for the tips.

Yeah Brent, that's how I can afford all my HT equipment and car mods!
Seriously though, I work as a waiter/bartender for a very prestigious country club and my daily uniform is a tuxedo.
