Hey Martin!
I always wondered why it wasn't broadcast on a Saturday night.
Maybe I am just looking at this from the Sunday EST time zone airing when it runs past 11 pm and people have to get up for work the next day. Always thought it would be more beneficial to air this on a Saturday instead.
I have always taken the opinion that making fun of people is universal, people should learn to laugh at themselves and comedians shouldn't have to be restrained.
That all being said, there is a line that shouldn't get crossed. The Globe article explains it perfectly. There was no need for...
I should have been more clear. There's talk he won't be back next year to present the best actress award. I tend to think he won't. However, I don't see him being permanently banned from The Oscars.
I'll take the blame for this no longer happening.
I lost interest in The Oscars. I think I was still working a midnight shift back when we were doing these live chats.
Maybe next year we can do one of those live Oscar chats again (with prizes)
Okay, this is a good point.
If Chris Rock did not know about Jada's alopecia (which I highly doubt is the case) then fair game. However, baldness in men is very common. Not in women and when I see a woman with her head nearly completely shaved I think twice about questioning or making fun of...
Oh, Chris, you are right.
Will Smith had absolutely no right to go on stage and do that.
All I was saying is that he had cause to be pissed off at that joke (though seemingly he wasn't until his wife rolled her eyes).
That's what I saw. I'll include the clip again.
Will Smith appears to laugh at the joke. His wife rolls her eyes.
Between that cutaway back to Chris Rock, I am assuming Will Smith saw his wife's reaction and that's what upset him.
As someone said, maybe he thought the joke was funny but...
Todd,
I didn't watch any of The Oscars. I missed the Covid Test segment.
I am presuming that maybe it's a difference between a joke that was in poor taste and a joke that cuts personally into someone's medical condition which becomes more personal?
Okay, guys, let's take a step back.
It's okay that some of us are disagreeing with each other. This is a good debate.
Just want to make certain this doesn't get personal and that posts have to be deleted.
That I agree with.
This was very, very personal for both Will Smith and his wife. They both had the right to be very upset over the joke (though why he initially laughed is beyond me). This has been a very public battle. I wouldn't know a thing about Jayda Pinkett if not for her highly...
On the surface, it was a G.I. Jane joke
However, it was directed at Will Smith's wife because of her hair which was a result of alopecia, a disease she has been publicly struggling with.
So, not just a G.I. Jane joke as far as some of us are concerned.
You missed the point.
Jada Pinkett Smith is battling alopecia which has affected her hair growth. It has been a public struggle. Not something that she enjoys going through. Her public struggle has been inspiring for other women.
It's almost like making fun of a cancer patient for their...
On Chris Rock's part...
One, this is a medical issue we are talking about. No, not cancer. However, Jada has a condition she has been battling publicly and I am certain it has been difficult for her.
Hard to think Chris Rock has no idea.
If Chris Rock had no idea he should come out and...
I think the cursing afterward proves otherwise. I understand there has been a long-standing feud between Smith and Rock.
I would love for you to be right, though. That was rather difficult to watch.
I take it you have seen the uncensored version of what happened?
For as long as I can remember I have always watched The Oscars. My favorite televised event of the year. Used to even take a day off work afterward.
I stopped watching about three or four years ago. I just stopped caring for some reason. Well, actually, I think it's because it just stopped...
I absolutely LOVED Coda. Raved about it on this forum.
I would love nothing more than that film to win BP. However, I think it's going to be POWER OF THE DOG which I thought was exceptionally done and critics have been fawning all over it for months.
I can relate.
The Oscars used to be the most important television event for me every year. As someone who is not into sports, it was my Superbowl. I would stay up late, watch it live, and often take off work the following day.
I used to make the effort year after year to post the nominees'...
Oh, completely understood, Reggie.
And for the record, I wasn't complaining. Just really crazy how things have changed.
Personally -- and I am sure I'll get crap for saying this -- I am happy streaming service films are being considered. I am not a theater-going individual. I go to the...
The actual nominations are pretty much in line with what was predicted.
BEING THE RICARDOS and TICK TICK BOOM was originally predicted to be nominated, but weren't.
What is most interesting is how the landscape for Oscars has changed. I remember Steven Spielberg wanting to ban streaming...
