I installed SL on my desktop and then removed it shortly
thereafter. Just reinstalled it last week because at least
two of the three mail plug-ins and system tweaks I use
just became available for the format.

Not true at all.
While it is always to do a backup before upgrading to
a new OS (that is what I did and I went back to Leopard)
I have never seen a new operating system on Mac zero
out any previous data or software.
Now, mind you, some software may not work correctly
once you upgrade...
I am removing Snow Leopard this morning.
I was a smart man to back up my system prior to install
via SuperDuper.
Too many things don't work including plugins, software
that has no updates yet, and most of all, the printer connected
to my network.
So, I'll go back to 10.5 for a few months...
