It's all in the eye of the beholder. Some of my best friends didn't find it at all appearing, others found it okay. About half loved it.
To get around preconceptions, I try to not discuss films in advance, and generally don't ready reviews. I much prefer to go in cold.

From a strictly tech perspective, please revisit the musical number half an hour in. You'll note that it's a single take, one source shadows. And then there's the audition. Please watch, and listen closely. Audio, music, lighting, camera movement.
