    Barbie (2023)

I’ve learned that my 13 year old niece has seen Barbie 3 times and the 14 year old niece once. They both liked it. I might rewatch when it’s out on streaming.

    Barbie (2023)

I understand that view. I was talking with a friend about Barbie (she loved it and isn’t a movie goer), and I commented: “i think experiencing Barbie is strongly informed by your life experience. What I find tediously unsubtle dialogue, others might think “finally someone is just putting it...

    Barbie (2023)

I appreciate that Barbie is worth talking and thinking about. It was a so-so experience for me. But it’s a movie with depth about something. Some movies (Avengers Civil War is my go-to example) that are just vapid. Maybe they’re fun, maybe they’re not. But they don’t merit any further...

Barbie also gave me Hudsucker Proxy vibes during the Mattel office scenes, insofar as I vaguely remember Hudsucker Proxy from watching however long ago. :)

    Barbie (2023)

As for Mattel’s role with the movie: it would be interesting to know if and how they were involved creatively. Because Mattel was represented as cartoonish buffoons, but neither hurtful nor harmful. Just silly and ineffectual. They were as much helpless to the whims of Barbieland as they were in...

    Barbie (2023)

You’re right, it’s not a dead-on match. That was my quick gut reaction as the movie got going and I was understanding what it was doing. But as we connect movies and styles to each other, Barbie feels like Toy Story and Lego and a little multi-verse to me, compared to other styles and genres...

    Barbie (2023)

I commented on this just prior, but I liked this aspect of the themes being wider scope than just anti-misogyny. It was a bit messy. Barbies aren’t perfect, even though they thought they were, as setup in the beginning, and hadn’t shaken that fully off by the end.

    Barbie (2023)

Barbie literally and figuratively shouted its message at me. That’s what let me down the most. It was too plain and boring in its messaging. I like the theme. But show me, don’t tell me. But I shouldn’t say this is bad writing. This is a matter of taste. I expect that many viewers appreciated...

18 pages of Barbie and apparently no one’s seen the movie / interested in talking about it. Bummer.

    Barbie (2023)

Barbie isn’t really my thing. It was cute and fun and had some good moments. But I was also getting bored throughout. I have high expectations for weird “multiverse” movies and Barbie was for me not nearly as interestingly written as I hoped for. Also, the dialogue. Not my preferred style: no...
