My modes are all pretty basic and nearly identical. What‘s key is Apple carried over two main features:
Fitness: turn on automatically when workout on the Watch runs
Driving: turn on automatically when driving
Cinema: No notifications at all, but can get phone calls from my Family (which is...
Been figuring out the Focus Mode feature, having gotten a few ideas from podcasts discussing, and then configuring them. I’m not the ideal Focus Mode user, in that I don’t work with my phone, nor do I tend to be task oriented with it. But, setting up Driving Mode anew, Fitness Mode, and...
Bummer that gigantic Pro Max gets more wasted space instead of more useful home screen compared to 8+ and smaller iPhones. Could fit entire extra row of apps in there.
Also confusing that Apple is working to bring key interfaces down to bottom of phone on big-screens, including bringing the...
iPhone 8 Plus vs iPhone 13 Pro Max Selfie Cameras
Huge difference. iPhone 8+ can do a selfie:
iPhone 13 PM can do Selfie, Zoomed Selfie, and Portrait Selfie. And they're all higher quality images in dusky light than the 8+. (But I still wish for an "ultrawide" front facing camera. Half of my...
I've realized that the iPhone 13 PM's buttons are different sizes and different locations than my iPhone 8+. But the phones are physically the same size. It's really messing with my muscle memory!
Ah technology. I love it. :)
Four years on, iPhone cameras and computational photography have improved. I'm glad to see the improvements, and will use this stuff in my snapshots and vacation photos.
But the differences have some nuance to them. They may not be visible in instagram tiny-squares and facebook doubly...
iPhone 8 plus (Left) and iPhone 13 Pro Max (right)
A low-light stress test, with shots of a dim scene (opening scene from John Wick). Using the 1x zoom on both cameras, just point and shoot. The 8 blew out the highlights trying to get the dark content. The 13PM gives everything. The third photo...
iPhone 8 plus (Left) and iPhone 13 Pro Max (right)
I'm was going for a stress test with a photo that had the sun directly in the center, bright and shade throughout, and strong saturated colors. The dynamic range of the 13 is again evident. These are both 1x cameras. I also included the 13PM's...
iPhone 8 plus (Left) and iPhone 13 Pro Max (right)
iPhone 8+ is in 2x zoom as close I could get to mimic macro. The 13 PM is physically close enough to trigger macro mode. It was a breezy and gusty day and I tried to get shots when it was quiet. Visibly, at full screen, the 13's macro shot is...
iPhone 8 plus (Left) and iPhone 13 Pro Max (right)
The dynamic range on the the newer phone is appreciably better. There's more detail and contrast in the right-side charred log while making out the color gradations of the flame.
The 13 is also capturing more detail. The left slightly...
I took a bunch of side-by-side photos on my 13 PM and 8+. From nighttime to looking into mid-afternoon sun. But haven't sat to review and compare them yet.
About 36 hours of reasonably normal weekend use, and the 20% Low Power alert just came on. So I turned on low power mode and we'll see where I am tonight.
FaceID is good. I like it.
It's not perfect, nor universal. It fails in cases where TouchID doesn't. And vice versa.
With a goal of failure-proof performance, Apple will find a way to incorporate multiple, complementary biometric systems. For users' benefit and simplicity.
Grocery shopping this morning first time with new iPhone, I discover what everyone has said the past year: FaceID in a pandemic sucks. I miss TouchID for shopping. Another reason for Apple to figure out dual biometric authentication.
Not everyone has an Apple Watch to get the...
And at the grocery store this morning found that Apple Pay wasn't transferred / setup in new iphone.
I don't mind that these things aren't transferred automatically. It's only 10 minutes to setup again with phone and watch. But it's a poor experience to not learn it until you actually need it...
I’m at 24 hours from being fully charged, modest use but a number of photos last night. Around 25% to 40% charged.
In contrast, my 4 year old iPhone 8+ was also on for the same duration and got similar use, particularly for photos (doing some comparos). It’s dead this morning. Have to charge...
Moved line to eSim. Didn’t do anything with the physical SIM in old iPhone. I think Apple in the ordering info says to not move the physical card.
It should have been seamless. But had to call Verizon to get the transferred line working.
Usability is the most apple-like concept there is
FaceID is unusable in some situations
iPhone is sitting on table (this morning at breakfast)
TouchID: Press finger on button without looking at it. IPhone unlocks and opens up. Super simple
FaceID: Tap iPhone. Then Drag iPhone screen. Then...
Apple definitely needs dual biometrics. FaceID is better sometimes, and TouchID is better sometimes. Having both so I could use the better option as situation dictates would be best.
Except in bed. As I expected from past reviews, faceid doesn’t work with some combination: of in bed, lying on my side, at night. This is where I miss touchid.
FaceID is pretty great so far. And really fast. Having it for 1Password is amazing. Glad I already bought an iPad Air last year, because now I’d have to spend up for the Pro. :)
Everything working now.
Watch didn’t have third-party apps installed. I installed my apps. That fixed the missing complications. Then I did some more setup needed to get syncing between iPhone apps and Watch apps and Health apps to get the whole health ecosystem working again.
I think...
