from what i read it sounds like you left out the vcr most dvd players do have inputs on them, so if you want you can plug the vcr into the dvd player and then take that from the tv but it sounds like your good now

If you have to use an optical(I'd use that over coaxial anyday if you have the option) and I assume you do, couldn't you just run both the cable and dvd into the tv(if you have enough inputs) and then use the digital audio out from the tv into your reciever. That seems like the easiest solution...

I too would say return it if it came torn. But if not check the warranty, if you got the standard warranty there is a good chance it doesnt actually cover screen repairs. I know screen repairs on a tv?!? who would have guessed.
