TV over the fireplace too high? I engineered a workaround!

I live in central Alabama so the fireplace will probably only get turned on 5 or 6 times a year. If I need the fireplace on for more than a few hours, I could simply take the TV down for a night. I did consider it, but figured it would probably be okay. As for the electronics, I think...

TV over the fireplace too high? I engineered a workaround!

I'm not exactly sure where this thread belongs if anywhere as this isn't really a dedicated home theater room problem; More of a "My house was built in the 2000s and the builders left a place above the fireplace for a TV to go, but it hurts my neck to look up at it" I was told by others that...

Seeking advice on a $1100 5.1 speaker set. Athena? Premier Acoustic? Or...?

for the front, what about Ascend Acoustics 340se's? I know you said they must be towers (and these are something between a tower and bookshelf)... but they deliver some amazing sound, especially if there will e a fair amount of music listening being done. if they must be towers for primarily...

    CMT 340's + what receiver?

imo, they blow anything in their price range out of the water. i haven't heard speakers costing over $1000/pair... but i've heard ascends perform well against speakers at and a bit above their price range. basically, my drift is you will have to spend twice as much to see any real improvement...

Going From 5.1 to 7.1 is there a difference?

i would say that going from mono to stereo is kind of a big deal. going from stereo to 5.1 is a HUGE upgrade. going from 5.1 to 7.1 is a lot less of a big deal, but still could enhance your experience (but don't expect to be blown away like going from 2.0 --> 5.1) this analogy might work: vhs...

    Upgrade speakers or stand pat?

Take a look at Ascend Acoustics. CMT-340se's across the front and either HTM-200 or CBM-170se's in the back. Once you pair with a sub from SVS (or Hsu, which Ascend sells themselves...) it will be tough to beat $2000 (or, imo under $3k or $4k).

    Help me guys!!!!

2500 is quite a budget. You could get an Ascends Acoustics package... even 340s all around, and a really nice sub from SVS or Hsu in the 600-900 dollar range and still come in at or even a little under budget. It's tough to beat an Ascends + Hsu/SVS combo for ~$2000 or less.

Best 5.1 set up for about $1500

you have tons of options at receiver. there are loads of quality receivers that will be fine in the 200-500 dollar range. just get one that you find aesthetically pleasing and one that might have some frills that you might use (iPod or XM ready? RS232 jack? HDMI switching?) you get the point...

    CMT 340's + what receiver?

i have the exact same question. i might be running ascend 340se's across the front and htm-200's across the back (5.1) and was wondering if the Onkyo TX-SR674 has enough juice to power it adequately...

Best 5.1 set up for about $1500

the reason i mentioned the htm-200s is because he was trying to save money on rears and we are already slughtly over his budget. also... i think 170s are overkill for home theater usage. now... if he is a heavy duty audiphile music listener... then i could definitely justify 170s in the back...

    Favorite XM Channels?

    I like 9 - 90s 20 - Top 20 on 20 26 - Flight 26 30 - XM Hitlist 44 - Fred 47 - Ethel 50 - The Loft 54 - Lucy ...but my personal favorite is XM 84 Chill. I listen to it every night while I sleep. Very peaceful to have in the background. I'm from the younger generation if you can't...

Best 5.1 set up for about $1500

on a $1,500 budget, i personally would go ahead and get a good 'woofer. A good sub is going to be better for bass than fronts.... even good fronts. Check out offerings from SVS. They make fantastic subs. An Ascend Acoustics package (340se's on the front... htm-200s in the rear) accompanied...

What can you do with an old PC?

a 5-7 year old PC could still be formidable. but we do need to know megahurtage. if it's over 500mhz, i'm sure a charity or inner city school would be thrilled to have it.

    SVS PB-12 vs Hsu VTF-3 MK2

Well, I've tried to get people to say anything negative about either of these subs... and without success... so I'll probably be happy with either a Hsu or SVS. I'll probably go the SVS route...

Building a laptop for a somewhat elaborate home theater - please help

Down the line, can we expect TV tuners to be able to record in HD? Is this something that will come around with technology... or is there some reason that it hasn't and likely won't be developed? Oh, and here are the results of my CPUZ test: CPU: Intel Pentium IV, 2657.8 MHz Family F...

    The "Get a Mac" Thread

While I am glad that you are happy with your Mac, I will stick with a PC. Interestingly enough, I've *never* had a real problem with Windows... while my roommate's Mac seems to give him lots of headaches. Add that to the wider support for Windows and not having to learn a new OS... and well...

Building a laptop for a somewhat elaborate home theater - please help

Hey guys... I'm new to the whole HTPC world, but definitely am interested in personal video recording without paying for a service like TiVo. That, and I've heard that an HTPC offers far, far more options than something like TiVo. In any event... here's my setup. I will be using an Onkyo...

Yamaha HTR-5960 enough to push Ascends+SVS???

90% movies, 10% music. dimensions of room = ~17x11 10' ceilings, room opens to a 11x19 kitchen/dining area, also with 10' ceilings. here's another question. could i use my current receiver as an amp? it is the receiver that came with the Kenwood HTiB 504 in 2001. 100 watts x5 channels. could...

Yamaha HTR-5960 enough to push Ascends+SVS???

Hey guys. I'm about to dump a couple thousand on some audio equipment and am looking at getting Ascend 340SE's on the fronts/center, with Ascend HTM-200s in the back... along with a SVS PB-12 NSD (or possibly an Hsu VTF-3 MKII) sub. Will the receiver have enough power to pump the whole...

    SVS PB-12 vs Hsu VTF-3 MK2

Everyone here recommended the SVS line. I've heard it is a great sub as well, but how does the Hsu line stack up to it? I'm in the market for either a SVS PB-12 NSD or Hsu VTF-3 MKII sub. Will primarily be using my theater for movies, gaming, and tv... only a little bit of music probably...

    XL-S or Ascend Acoustics
