Steve, Thanks for your help. Implemented the change. Mendoza, The right speaker wire would have to go over the front doorway and the left wire over the doorway to the kitchen/dining room. Just too dang many doorways to negotiate. This duplex's 16 by 12 living room just totally sucks...
Since moving to a different house I'm not able to connect the two rear surround speakers so am only using a 3.1 setup. The receiver is a Denon 1803 and usually set to auto detect the Dolby signal off the dvd's. If I let it play the 5.1 signal, does that mean I will not hear the sounds that...
The Athena's sensitivity is 90 db and all the other's are in the 86-87 range. Since your receiver puts out only 30 watts, the higher sensitivity speaker would suit you better.
Thanks guys, I knew this forum would come through. I will now always listen to music in Direct mode. Even though it may take my ears some time to detect the difference I trust you sound connoisseurs know what you're talking about. I'd been on a little quest to maximize my listening experience...
I'm unable to detect any differences between the two other than volume seems a little lower in Direct mode. Then again, my ears aren't as trained as some of you sound connoisseurs. Can anyone please explain the difference between the two modes? I'm listening to music cd's played back on the dvd...
Yo Muneeb, Thanks for the heads up. Bought a y splitter today and tried your suggestion on my Dayton and lo and behold the volume did increase noticeably. The gain control on the Dayton is now turned down to about 10 o'clock position to compensate for the increase in output.
Cliff, Congrats on scoring the Yammie, deal of the year, didn't think Sears would have any left by now, you must be really lucky! Get the Dayton sub for $109 plus shipping which should total about $140...best bang for your subwoofer buck. For the rears get the Wharfedale WH-2 in white from...
Shawn,
Thanks for the tip on the store locator on their website. I've not seen a store in my area but the locator showed the closest one at eight miles away. Looks like I'll be taking a little drive to one soon.
Matt, If you feel reading a review of both the Denon and Onkyo would help your decision, an excellent one is at homecinemachoice dot com. I've got the Denon 1803 which is the precusor to the 1804, very similiar in all aspects, and I'm very happy with it. If you are using it in a small to medium...
Hey Raj, I'm using a pair of BIC V62's as mains and Wharfedale WH2's for rears. And I think the WH2's are a great bang for the buck at about half the cost the BICs. But you have to consider how they are being used. When I listen to music, I only use two channels (mains) and the sub for the...
By all means keep that Tiny Mighty/Dayton. Put it next to the couch and let the LFE vibrate the couch and everyone sitting on it. Anyone watching something like Finding Nemo in your new home theater will be talking about how your couch was vibrating, guaranteed.
Thanks Jerry, I got the new Matrix also, just to check out the outrageous LFE on the soundtrack and yep, your sub will get tested to it's limits on this one.
Wayne and Matt, I ordered the Tiny Mighty from partsexpress this morning, should arrive late Friday. I should have enought time to switch out the Jensen before the wife gets home. The Jensen 12 inch I'm currently using sounds fine for movies, it shakes the sofa, the floor and walls pretty good...
I'm somewhat suprised that most of the households I'm familiar with don't have a HT sound system. This includes friends, relatives and all the houses that I clean in (I have a carpet cleaning business). Two households have an AVR but only have the two main speakers. I'm going to talk to the man...
How can I tell if my sub is boomy or not? I'm not sure what is meant by boomy. So, if anyone can describe how to tell if a sub is sounding good or bad, I would really appreciate it.
Hey Jason, You didn't mention your sub. Is it a BIC, too? I don't have a BIC sub but am thinking of getting their 12 inch. I'm using a Jensen 12 inch sub and it does the job adequately so I don't have any rush to get upgrade yet. I do have a pair of V62's for my mains and my center is a BIC...
You can place your center as high as you need to get rid of interference with you tv. If need, then tilt the center downward toward your listening position to compensate for the increased distance from the tv. If this solution works for you, there will be no need to add shielding to the center...
I have the Denon 1803, precursor to the 1804, which is almost identical to the 1804. If your room is not huge, the 1804 will perform beautifully for you. I have cranked my 1803 up as loud as my ears can stand and could not detect any distortion whatsoever. Music, speech, special effects all...
Tom, You're right on about placing sub in corner near seating. My living room is small, 12 feet wide, and by necessity, the sub is sitting next to the sofa under the end table in the corner. Everyone sitting on the sofa watching a dvd with a good soundtrack feels those ground shaking low...
Get the sub first. You're missing a lot more without a sub than the center. With a sub, you'll be able to feel sound effects such as the dinosaurs walking in your living room from Jurassic Park 3, etc. And if you place the sub next to the sofa like I've got mine, everyone sitting on the sofa...
Rich, check out the Wharfedale WH-2 bipolar surrounds for $62 a pair at ecost.com rated for 120 watts. I'm very satisfied with my pair. I haven't seen anything else in this price range that's a better value. Keep in mind bipolars perform best mounted in a corner location. Rear surrounds don't...
I've had my Denon 1803 for exactly one week and I'm in HT heaven. If you like your sound warm and natural, Denon is the ticket. The 1604 will have enough power for small to medium size rooms, so keep that in mind.
I want to thank everyone for your inputs. I'm now a proud and happy owner of a Denon 1803 as of last Saturday. It was a four month old unit and my wallet only got lighten by 265 smackers. I got into this HT thing just two months ago when I bought the Kenwood, so I'm very new at trying to trying...
Al, I bought a Denon 1803 today and it sure sounds sweet. The 1804 which replaces the 1803 are both nearly identical with 10 more watts in the 1804. You didn't mention your room size. The Denon is not the most powerful, when all 5 channels are driven, the actual power output drops to 35 watt...
