I received my copy of the Joe McDoakes collection in the mail yesterday. All 63 shorts are included in a 6 disc set, arranged (as far as I can tell) in chronological order by release date. Four of the discs contain 11 shorts each, one has 10, and the other has 9. I only had time to watch...
Good news earlier than we'd hoped? WB's HTF chat earlier this year mentioned a complete McDoakes collection as a likely Warner Archives release, though I think they said it wouldn't be out until 2010. But a complete set appears to be available right now as a pre-order on the WB Shop website...
Hello fellow Droogs, I sort of fell off HTF recently, but I'm still watching lots of movies. Happy New Year to everyone here!
Anyone else seen Valkyrie yet? I actually thought it was great. I was hoping it would be decent, and the reviews were sort of OK, but it definitely exceeded...
I think it makes sense that this was all part of the Joker's master plan, although it could have been explained a bit more clearly a little farther down the line. The Joker lied about who was being kept in which location because he figured that Batman would get there first, while the cops would...
Thanks for the great review, Matt. I loved this movie when I saw it in its theatrical re-release a couple of years ago, so I'm really looking forward to getting it on DVD. It's definitely a must-see for any fans of '50s/'60s French crime films.
I'm with you on that, Crawdaddy, having watched everything in this boxset now on a blind buy. Garden of Evil is very nicely filmed and has that great score, plus some good drama whenever they get around to it, but the script is heavy on philosophizing and short on character or compelling...
I guess I can see people thinking that Indy IV is really bad if they don't think Ford did a good job in the role this time. This series is obviously a lot more about one central character than SW ever was. If you buy into his performance this time, then that's about all you need for it to be a...
I saw Indy IV today. Overall, I think it's pretty good, maybe a notch below Last Crusade and a bit better than Temple of Doom. The crystal skull business doesn't make much sense on its own terms near the end, but there's a lot of good character stuff and some fun action scenes. It definitely...
Saw this today; I thought it was pretty good. I'd rank it below Last Crusade but a bit above Temple of Doom. The whole crystal skull business just sort of petered out, as people have been saying, which is lesser in comparison to what was probably the best thing in Last Crusade: the...
The initial rumblings on the web about Indy IV weren't too good, from what I could tell, but it's actually doing really well on Rotten Tomatoes, something like 80% fresh. I was planning on seeing it anyway, but it's good to hear that it might be decent enough, a la Last Crusade.
That's clearly what they're indicating from their latest newsletter: I'm very glad they'll be releasing it. I'd been expecting this since I saw it in a theater last year on a Janus Films re-release. The hint also seems to indicate that they'll be releasing other Max Ophuls movies as...
Even though it didn't have a trailer for Teeth, Iron Man was a fun time at the movies--I saw it last night. The hype is a bit out of control, and I don't think it's as great as the collective praise is making it seem to be, but Downey is really well cast and there are some terrific action...
Actually, the entire plot of Red is touched off by one of the characters accidentally running over a dog, if I remember right.
Wait a minute, was everyone talking about some other kind of "dog"?
Hey Steve, I finally saw the DVD of Grand Prix over the weekend, about two years after it came out. I think I remember you being a big fan of that movie. Well, the script is total dreck, but those racing scenes sure are incredible. I don't think I'll be buying it, because I'd never want to...
No announcement of this title yet from Warners, but... I noticed that in the just-announced Errol Flynn Westerns boxset, the 1950 Flynn Western Rocky Mountain will have a trailer for The Breaking Point included as one of the extra features. Is this reason to hope for a release of that film in...
Fun comments, Steve...I thought that movie was really good, but awfully depressing. The cast definitely makes it work, everyone in it is terrific. And some naked Marisa doesn't hurt either. ;)
I really liked the original Sleuth when I saw it on TV some years ago, but the DVD is out of print...
That clip is from Kill Bill Vol. 1.
Russell, any chance you might run into The Guns of Brixton? :P I'd post a video, but I can't access YouTube here at work.
Steve Christou may be the Testy representative of one of the countries that invented "gunboat diplomacy," but how about Japan's latest invention...anime diplomacy!
Rick, I saw The Big Trail in a theater last year, in that original widescreen version. It was nice to look at, but the script and the acting were pretty clunky. It's an interesting curiosity, but I don't think it holds up very well.
