Let me know when you get your DD10 and compare it with the SVS. For WAF reasons, I'm thinking of making a similar switch (from a PB12-ISD, maybe to a DD10 or DD12).
Maybe it is time to reread the book. I'm thinking about it. . . But I guess maybe it's the movie. In the movie (at least) they seemed so all-powerful that they could well have wiped up at Mordor on their own, or at least provided an enormous distraction, whatever was happening or had...
OK, OK, I totally cave on point 3 (about Frodo and Sam) and mostly on point 2 (about Sauron leaving Mount Doom empty), though on the latter, it really was idiotic not to put say 50 orcs at the crack of doom, or whatever it was called. I mean, the other side has no trouble imagining that Sauron...
Sorry if these have already been covered (I've only read about the last 20 pages of posts). On watching the movie, I had a few nitpicks that I thought you guys could help me get over (I read the book 3 times, but many years ago) 1. It seems like Aragorn made a major mistake with the Army...
Ha, I can return an old favor from "Brucer" on avsforum, or at least pass it along. I had the same question. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=288992 The bottom line: there are switch boxes designed for this, not just reverse speaker selector boxes. I got the one suggested in...
Who (else) can say, and having lived most of one life doesn't make me an expert. But I remember clearly a time in college when I couldn't decide between on the on one hand physics/economics and on the other literature/art etc. Now, I've regretted many decisions in my life, but not the one to go...
I thought the Rives disk would be nice for quick-and-dirty checks (I know, not what this person wanted, but I thought I'd mention it). If the system is reasonably well set-up, you can just run through the tracks without adjusting the settings on the meter too much. It's good for quickly checking...
Wonderful movie. Not a romantic comedy, so don't go expecting one. I have a question for those who've seen it. what do you think he whispered in her ear at the end of the movie?
Thanks, Andy (Admin note - discussion about that question can be found in the official discussion...
This is sort-of a repeat post from the same thread over on avs forum, but what about those of us who don't care much about dvd-a and are looking for a good sacd/progressive scan dvd player? How about this one vs. the Sony dvd-nc685 (or the ns755 on ebay)? I know, the Pioneer has DVD-A and the...
J.M., Sorry about the basic question but could you explain this a bit more? You say "The Avia DVD is a true Dolby Digital disc. As such, the subwoofer test tone is not discrete like the internal one from an AVR." Do you mean that in the Avia test tones, the "subwoofer" test tone is not...
I'm in the same boat, so not to hijack the thread, but . . . This is for my second system, in the living room. High WAF required. I'm going to use bookshelves, such as Ascend 340l/r, monitor audio, or B&W 303s, and an Onkyo sr600 receiver. 100 percent two-channel music. The CD player needs to...
I think that's the same error as made by the author, though I would be most happy to be educated. Don't you have to add the two curves together, not just superimpose them? For example, consider the point where they cross, where each speaker is -6db. I thought that if you added two identical...
I'm not arguing about the Bose, but that article doesn't seem very competent. The author does not seem to understand how to add the frequency response graphs from the different speakers to get the combined frequency response. It doesn't look like there is a dip of more than -3 at the cross-over...
Two unrelated comments. On music today vs. years ago, it's remarkable to me how little popular music has changed since say 1982 or three. Even rap was already around then. Compare that to the differences in musical styles from the '40s (Big band etc.) to '50s (doo wop, rock and roll) to '60s...
Hey, Dan, for what it's worth (what do I know?) I wasn't talking about brass ensembles (e.g. Canadian Brass). But after years of reflection, I think "concert band" exists to occupy the marching band during the rest of the year. THose big mixed wind ensembles that are like orchestras and play...
I played trumpet through high school and into college. Then a few years off. About 8 years ago a friend in a blues band (made up of coworkers) convinced me to come to a practice, and I've been playing with them from time to time, and occasionally (though not in the past few years) going to open...
David, I'm being lazy but it would be great if you could e-mail me your RS compensation file. I have a feeling I may e-mail you again about specific problems, since you have the same setup. I remember you used to use Spectraplus. Why did you switch?
Thanks. I'm good to go on the BFD (I've got their computer program working too; it's great). I was being lazy about the .cal program, since I've used the adjustment factors referenced in that web site for my by-hand and Spectraplus calculations. I did wonder about the phase adjustment part of...
I'm having a tough time trying out the ETF software on my Win98SE/Create Soundblaster Audigy setup. So three questions: 1. Does someone have an updated link to a help guide from an HTF member that was mentioned several times in the past but which seems broken? The link is/was...
A bit off-topic, I suppose, but what is the deal with Matt Damon always wearing that ridiculous hat? The one shot I saw him without it, he didn't look like he was going bald.
I also am calibrating my SR600 with the AVIA. I alternated back and forth as described above and didn't have a problem. I did get some output from my left main while doing the subwoofer calibration tones, even when just the subwoofer channel was supposed to be playing (alternating with the...
I've tried using spectraplus to measure distortion and found it was pretty tricky, more so than frequency response. The main thing for me was that background noise is a much bigger problem than for frequency response. After all, if your background noise is 20db lower than the testing frequency...
Richard Greene,
How low is "very slow" for a sine wave sweep?
As I've posted elsewhere, I get similar results with a ~1 minute 16-100hz sweep as with 1/6 octave tones, for the frequencies that are common to both measurements (the sweep gives much more detail, which I found to be...
That does help. Now, after much trial and error, that's how I do it (same settings and sound card too). It hadn't occurred to me to use the pink noise to match levels across speakers between sub and mains, but that makes sense. You could adjust the gain and watch the curve shift in real time.
I've updated these results over at AVS forum thread on this topic The bottom line: (1) RTA of pink noise is not the way to go, at least in that it does not pick up many of the important modes that sine wave tones would pick up. The last picture I posted on the other thread was very...
[Thisis a repeat of my post on a similar thread over at AVS forum. I don't see how to post the graph here. It's over there, though.] AVS post (with picture) It mostly talks about whether you need to adjust the RS line out, as some there were doubting. Also compares different techniques of...
