    Onkyo-606 overheating solution

I recently bought the Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver since I couldnt pass up the price at Circuit City (liquidation sale). Right away I noticed that this receiver runs a lot hotter than any of my old receivers. After looking around I found a very simple and effective solution especially if you have the...

Friday night I completed the setup process for the E85 and turned it of so it can download the TV Guide On Screen info. After 24 hours it still said that there was no data to display so I let it go overnight again. This morning I check and it says that there was no data because the download...

    What is bitstream PCM???

The audio output on the DVD player thats labled "pcm bitstream" should also be labled "digital audio out". It should at least be labled "optical" or "coaxial". Is it a rectangular shape with a little swinging door type opening? Sorry, thats the best way I can describe it. Well thats for an...

Am I Unimpressed with Home Theater or does mine just suck?

Allen, Maybe I misunderstood but in your first post you talked about moving the bed out of there and then the speakers would be about 14 feet apart. You might have been talking about the rear speakers and that would be fine for them. Good luck with everything and I sure hope you get it sounding...

Am I Unimpressed with Home Theater or does mine just suck?

Allen, I have one other suggestion that I forgot to mention and this one is the most important. You absolutely MUST do a better job of connecting your speaker wire. By your own description you've got frayed strands of wire touching the other terminal or even the other wire. You also mentioned...

Am I Unimpressed with Home Theater or does mine just suck?

Allen, Here's two suggestions that should make a huge difference. The first one as suggested by everyone else is for you to return the receiver if possible because its probably faulty. If you cant return it for a new one then you'll probably have to get a new one to eliminate that hissing...

Hey Kris, For $400 you can get a decent Onkyo system but it wont include the DVD player. :frowning: You can check them out at Circuit City. Heres an example of the system from the Onkyo site. http://www.shoponkyo.com/catalog_det...&p=i&ext_war=1 For complete systems including the DVD...

Help, hissing/buzzing sound from my speakers

Martin, One of my friends just told me that he reduced the hissing he had by plugging the system into a different circuit and also using a power strip/surge suppressor.

Help, hissing/buzzing sound from my speakers

Check out the other post with this same subject. The buzz you hear is normal but a higher quality system (or sometimes a different brand) might give you "cleaner" power and decrease or even eliminate the buzz.

    Infinity

My opinion of Infinity is that they use quality parts and are well made but are a bit over-priced, especially on their lower end speakers. I agree with Jack that they have a "brighter" sound or accentuate the highs instead of a "warmer" sound which would accentuate the mids or lows. I think the...

    matching old and new technology...

Aris, You also wont be able to use the component cables because your TV wont be able to display a progressive image anyway. You would need an HDTV or HD-ready TV in order to take advantage of progressive scan.

Heres a link for the Sound & Vision tune-up DVD.... http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/art...&page_number=1 Like Graham said, you can pick up an analog SPL meter at radio shack. I wouldnt recommend getting the digital meter. For the amount of times youre probably going to use it it's not worth...

    Micro Budget Home Theater

Collin, Welcome to the forum!! Getting a decent receiver to start off sounds like a good idea considering that you already have a set of speakers. Are your Paradigm speakers very old? Do you think you could find a center to match them? I think you should keep the Paradigms and try to get a...

    updating home theater ??

Mike, The reports I've read from Fluance owners is that they sound very good for the money but they look much cheaper than they show on the website. I would imagine they use cheaper materials to keep the costs so low but most people say they sound good. Send a PM to TommyWMedford. He recently...

    updating home theater ??

The Onkyo systems are on the better end of the HTiB scale but I think the biggest improvement would be for you to get a new receiver. Maybe the Onkyo receiver that comes with that system for around $300. Just having a receiver that can play DD, DTS and PLII will make a big difference. Of...

Greg, Congratulations on choosing a system. What did you decide on anyway? As far as the speaker wire goes 16 gage will work just fine. I'm surprised you cant find it at lowes. Sometimes even walmart carries it. You should be able to find a spool of 100 ft. for under $30.

John, Yes the s-38's are finished on all sides and can be used either vertically or horizontally. It is just suggested to use horizontally. Heres a link to the owners manual to read a little about it.... http://images.amazon.com/media/i3d/0...L000001328.pdf

In a Pickle, JBL Studio Series Phased Out....

John, You can stand the s-38's vertically if you want but they recommend that you use them horizontally. I think the soundstage and imaging is improved when you use them horizontally. You'll have to decide which way you prefer.

Hey John, Nice choice in speakers. I think you'll love those S-38II's. I always thought they sounds awesome. Great bass for bookshelf speakers. Need your opinions on the Infinity Entra Three

Like Dan said, if you like how they sound thats all that matters. Infinity makes quality speakers. You definately got a good price on them too. Have you ever calibrated your system? That would probably solve the low volume from the rear speakers. Pick up an analog SPL (sound level) meter from...

Hey Greg, Welcome to the forum. I was wondering if your $300-$400 budget includes everything or is the DVD player seperate from that? The reason I ask is because you could get this Onkyo system that is often recommended for $400 but it doesnt include a DVD player...

    JBL 5.1 SCS135SI speakers

It is normal for you to hear a faint hissing sound coming from the speakers when you put your ear very close. sub set at 0 and only turned on 3/10 on sub, still at 85DB's, help

Dustin, I have found, and I've also read, that calibrating the sub with an SPL meter can be difficult because the sub will give higher readings than the rest of the speakers even when its turned way down. I think the best thing to do with the sub is to adjust it as best you can by ear. One...
