Thanks for the input so far ... I'll have to see if I can find the athenas to take a closer look. The SVS system was the first thing that came to my mind. My only concern is that they may look a little big mounted on the wall. Since this is not going to be a primary system, I don't think I'll...
Ok, I'm going to buy a sat system for three season porch. We will be primarily watching TV and the occasional movie. Since the room is quite small, I want to use wall mounted Sat. speakers. Also, I would like to keep the speaker cost to $500 or less. Currently, I'm thinking of the Polk RM6750 or...
I got my Panasonic 42PX60 about 4 months ago. I used the calibration settings from plasmareview web site. As it turns out, these settings are "hot". We watch a lot of non-HD content. Early on, we were diligent to watch in "Just" mode which stretches the signal to fill the screen. Since the TV...
Do you need a TV or will a monitor work? The Pany monitors are black. I went with the Pany 60X because I got a really good deal black Friday weekend. Otherwise, I would have gone with a Pany monitor.
I got the Panasonic 60x for $1099 at Cirtuit City during Black Friday weekend. I suspect we will see them below $1200 in the next week or two for Super Bowl sales. This is a great set and gets fantastic reviews. The other thing I like about it, I found at least one review that published...
I tried the 1014 and wasn't happy with the sound quality or power. I felt my yamaha Rx-v630 had more real world power and was more musical. The the 1014, however, did do well with dialog. BTW, I have also hooked my yamaha up to some energy c3 speakers. While I prefer my boston speakers, I...
I agree, Ascend and Axiom get a lot of press here. I haven't tried Ascend, but I did buy some Axiom speakers. They were very nice and still have a home in my parent's HT. I however prefer my Boston Acoustics. It's a personal thing.
I'm very happy with my Yamaha RX-V630. It retailed for about $500, but I got it on closeout for $270. If you buy last seasons model, you can get a very nice receiver for under $500.
I haven't used any of the receivers in your list, however, I've used some that are close. I own/owned the Pioneer VSX-1014, Yamaha RX-V630, Onkyo TSX500 (not sure on the model, it was with a HTIB system). All are nice receivers, but IMHO each has different strengths. I have a hard time...
I find it hard to believe the 1014 is 100 WPC ... I have both this unit and a yamaha RX-V630. The Yamaha appears to have more real world power when used in my system. Back to your question ... How happy are you with the pioneer for features and sound? If you are happy but want more power ...
I bought a Pioneer 1014. After a week, my yamaha RX-v630 went back to being my primary receiver. Everyone has different taste, but IMHO, the yamaha was the better unit.
If you can swing it, you can get the Energy C-C1 center for $175 and a pair of C1 speakers for $150. The C1s are not floor standing, but they sound great and you can use speaker stands.
I have the yamaha RX-V630 and Pioneer 1014. The yamaha is much better with music and, IMHO, better with movies. The pioneer did do a better job with TV (go figure!). At $199, I might still consider the pioneer if it were mainly for movies.
I enjoyed the energy/yamaha combo. Mine was C3 paired with RX-v630. I've also tried the Athena/pioneer combo. This one wasn't bad considering the price, but not my favorite for music. Did very well with movies.
I had Athena paired with both a yamaha rx-v630 and pioneer 1014. I preferred the yamaha. Make sure you give us a full review of the yamaha when it arrives. Leigh
I would consider used or refurbished. You can get a nice set-up for around $200 in ether of those two categories. For example, take a look at a refurbished Onkyo 503. They are $159 at JR.com
I own the pioneer 1014 and yamaha rx-v630. I bought the pioneer to replace the yamaha based on the rave reviews. It only lasted a week before the yamaha went back in my main system. The pioneer was given to my parents.
I haven't listened to the Energy Take 5 speakers, but I have listened to the C-1 and C-3. These two sound great! The fact that they are ported in the front gives you more flexibility in placement. Also, they seem to be on sale these days.
I own both the Yamaha RX-V630 and Pioneer 1014. The pioneer has more bells and whistles, but, IMHO the yamaha sounds better, and appears to have more power (despite the power ratings).
Thanks for the info. Somehow I missed the responses earlier. Will the amp change the sound of the speakers like a change in receiver brand can? BTW, I'm using a yamaha RX-V630 paired with Boston CR speakers.
Ok, I have a stupid question. I'm guessing if I add an amp to power my front speakers this will reduce the load on my receiver. Is that correct? If I never push my system to my receiver limits will I see any benefit adding an amp? On a side note, what do you think about the Onkyo M-282 amp...
You just described my wife! You really need to take her to listen to the speakers. Have her take some recordings that she is very familiar with. When we went listening we took a classical piece, jazz instrumental, and both male and female vocals. My wife's opinions were: Vienna Acoustics...
My first system was an Onkyo HTIB. Nice receiver matched to cheap but capable speakers. I no longer own any of the components, but they served their purpose by giving me the "bug". I now own a much nicer system complete with SVS sub. I think a HTIB has its place, but that's just me. :D
After moving to a new house, I find I have extra speakers. I'm looking to sell the following (Note all were taken out of the box to test, but never used in a system): Athena AS-C1 $100 Athena AS-B1 $100 Parts Express 10" Sub $75 The following were lightly used in a second system for...
I've have a Boston CR85, CR75, VRC system and love the sound. I have also listened to energy C3 speakers and think they sound very good. I've seen these new on ebay for $284 a pr. The nice thing about them is they are ported in the front. This will provide better sound when wall mounting.
