    Help diagnose my Tempest problem...

I've got a Adire Tempest in a giant enclosure (244 liters I think) and it's powered by a Parts Express 250 watt plate amp. The sub is about 5 years old and has performed like a champ up until a month or two ago. Sometimes when I turn my system on, the sub is dead. It doesn't matter if the amp...

Foam to line enclosed speaker walls...where to pick some up?

Here is the killer: I would like to pick some up locally. Thanks for the links, though.

Foam to line enclosed speaker walls...where to pick some up?

I didn't think about sheets of poly-fil. The only stuff I've ever seen came in the form of one big cotton ball. I'll look around for some in the sheet form. The eggcrate matress is what I originally had planned to use, but the only thing the local Wal-Mart has is this weather proof stuff with...

Foam to line enclosed speaker walls...where to pick some up?

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Is there any major stores that carry the stuff? I would like to get it locally so I can line it tonight.

Foam to line enclosed speaker walls...where to pick some up?

I'm nearing completion of my A/V-3S and I need to find some foam to line the interior walls of the cabinet. I should be looking for open-cell foam, right? Also, where is the best place to pick some up? TIA

    Sonicaps and wiring polarity question...

Thanks Brian. I was hoping that was the answer. :) Too cold to go get a shirt. Dipping into the 60's through the day here lately. :D

    Sonicaps and wiring polarity question...

I'm full swing into building my A/V-3S center channel speaker and will be assembling the crossover tonight. While looking at the Sonicap capacitors that came with the kit, I can not tell the polarity of either end. Doesn't capacitors have polar ends (+ / -)? If so, what are the identifying marks...

Best way to attach some 1/16" skin/veneer/sheets to MDF?

Sounds exactly like what I used on my Tepest. My plywood veneer is Birch and the hardwood trim/top is Red Oak. See my www for pics. To attach the plywood veneer is simply used yellow wood glue and a few bags of kitty litter (unused ;) ) Mine turned out great. No resonance or hollow spots...

Will a GR AV-3S play fine if horizontal?

Here is the A/V-3S box diagram that I received from Danny... http://65.35.82.154:8000/AV-3S%20box.pdf

Will a GR AV-3S play fine if horizontal?

My only option for placement is on top of the TV in a large entertainment center armoire. If it helps any, the A/V-3S is a sealed unit.

Will a GR AV-3S play fine if horizontal?

I just ordered my GR AV-3S kit today to be used as my center channel. Is it generally OK to run bookshelf speakers positioined horizontally as opposed to their usual vertical position?

    Building AV-3S enclosure tomorrow....Should I use MDF?

Wayne: That was the thread that prompted my questions on using MDF. :) I have plenty enough MDF left over from my sub build to complete the enclosure. I just wanted to be sure there is no down-side (other than weight) to using MDF for mains/surrounds/centers.

    Building AV-3S enclosure tomorrow....Should I use MDF?

I'm finally over my case of the flu and will begin construction of my enclosure for a GR AV-3S bookshelf unit tomorrow. Is MDF the best material for the enclosure?

Veneer from Home Depot/Lowes...is it good?

Bob and Mattak: Thanks for the compliments. :) I put a lot of time and effort into the sub and I'm very pleased with the results. The veneer I used on it was like a 1/8" plywood sheet with one side finished. I have some left over and would love to use that, but there's no way to get the rigid...

Veneer from Home Depot/Lowes...is it good?

Bob: I haven't decided for sure how to finish the bookshelf speakers I'll be building. It's a toss up between a dark cherry to match other furniture or a traditional high gloss black. If I go the black gloss route I will not need veneer at all, right? Is the paperbacked stuff (where you...

Veneer from Home Depot/Lowes...is it good?

I'm beginning construction of a GR A/V-3S for a center channel speaker and was browsing Lowe's for some paper veneer today. They only seemed to have one brand, I forget the name. It came in multiple types : sticker based, iron on, and manual glue. Anybody used veneer from the big two? Also...

Will Onkyo SR600 drive GR A/V-2s?

In my printed manual that came with the unit, it only lists sub-8 ohm power ratings for 2 channel operation. The web site clearly lists all 6 channels. :) The unit is in its own shelf in my ent center with only about 1 1/2" to the bottom of the next shelf up, so that is cutting it very close...

Will Onkyo SR600 drive GR A/V-2s?

After reading a bit more, 4ohm speakers and the Onkyo 600 seem like a bad idea. Anything similar in price/performance to the A/V-2 in an 8 ohm configuration?

Will Onkyo SR600 drive GR A/V-2s?

I've been searching around for DIY bookshelf kits and have ran across the A/V-2s from GR. These seem to be great speakers and I'm considering buying kits for my mains and eventually center channel. These speakers are rated at ~4 ohm and I will be driving things from my receiver, which is an...

Final List of Parts Need For Adire Alignment Sub?

If the driver has dual voice coils, you may need some 12G speaker wire to run them in parallel. (Lowes) Get Polyfil at Wal-Mart...$3 for 20oz bag. (Wal-Mart) Caulk to seal up seams. (Lowes) Closed-Cell foam to seal the driver and ports. (Lowes)

    Tempest low freq performance questions/concerns

Great idea on gluing in a "filler" block. If my caulk doesn't work I may line every seam with trim on the inside to be double sure all leaks are stopped. I'll also give the low freq air leak search a try. Thanks for the hints, JamesT

    Tempest low freq performance questions/concerns

Thanks for the advice everybody. The air leak I had on my bottom panel was massive. After taking the driver out and sticking my head in the hole, I could see light (!) coming through the spot where the leak was. I caulked up the crack and will try again this afternoon. The thing is, I had no...

    Tempest low freq performance questions/concerns

Finally got around the creating a test tone disc and running some low freq sine waves through the new Tempest. I have the budget Radio Shack SPL meter and I think I'm having some performance issues with my new sub. I had originally written it off as "bad room", but I'm not so sure now. I...

Did I stuff my Tempest properly?

The ports are flared with 11" center tubes, and basically fit into the two chambers on the right-hand side of the pic. I'm sure the ends of the ports are plunged into the poly-fil. This weekend I'll have some time to open her up again and shift the stuffing around. Another related...

Did I stuff my Tempest properly?

I now have the DIY bug and have been reading up on building some bookshelf speakers. During the reading I see a couple spots that point out, during stuffing, be sure not to "impede the airflow between woofer and port". Does this rule also apply for vented subs? My Tempest is an Adire...

Can poor room acoustics be defeated with a stronger amp?

First Tempest project finally done...and it POUNDS!

Thanks for the walk-around idea. Turns out with my new sub in the first location I thought it should go it is almost acousticly invisible in the middle of the room. Moved to a new spot and it sounds much better. I need to rearrange the room so I can stuff it in the corner. In the meantime, I'll...

First Tempest project finally done...and it POUNDS!

The screws were left in. I've read that they are dangerous to use, but I didn't have problems. I was sure to pre-drill every stinking hole, though. :) One reason I used the screws is I only have 3 bar clamps. Royce, the amp is a Parts Express 250W 300-794 (the one without bass boost). I...
