Hello there - thanks for this information. I am thinking of purchasing this DVD - may I please ask you a couple of questions about it?
Firstly, are you absolutely certain the episodes are cut?
Also - is the pilot the 2-part syndication version or the 2hr (i.e. 90 minutes) version originally...
Ransom for a Dead Man was released in cinemas in the UK in 1972, and the BBFC website has it listed as running 94m 53s. The video release of a few years back is also up there, running at 91m 7s (PAL speedup). So, basically it's about 95m at the correct speed. Does this mean it has been...
Does it really matter that much if a 1.66:1 film is given a non-anamorphic release? I just watched New York, New York on VHS a few days ago and the black bars were very slight.
A good movie which hopefully will become better regarded as time goes by, since it seems to have an undeserved rep for being a bit of a stinker at the moment. Regarding the ending: I think the Director's Cut end is a bit better than the Theatrical version, but still problematic. I could see...
I think this is an unfortunate corollary of how the show is recorded, i.e. digibeta which has underwent a filmisation technique. The BBC series The League of Gentlemen utilises this format also and has similar 'jaggies' evident on the R2 DVD -- in this case however, much less noticeable...
Anyone received this yet? Looking forward to it very much, but there seems to be little info yet despite the street date being next Tuesday. Specs are listed on the Warner Bros site, and they look pretty good: "ER Specialists - Anatomy of an Episode" featurette "Life as an ER Director" -...
I've just dug one of last year's issues of Premiere from the bottom of the birdcage, and there's a review of the Criterion Collection's Antoine Doinel boxset in which they express concern over the colour films having been cropped from 1.66:1. The last issue I bought contains excellent reviews...
Premiere is still an excellent mag IMO. This business over the Annie DVD *must* be just a momentary lapse, they do happen. I for one am not going to stop buying it -- it's the best film magazine on the market. It is in no way, shape or form "a forum for Joe Six Pack". In the main it is a...
I thought that was maybe due to the recording process, i.e. digibega or whatever it is. If you zoom in on a head & shoulders shot, it's actually very clear indeed -- above average I'd say. Perhaps it was never going to be any better than this?
That's great news, thanks for posting PaulP. Here in the UK it's become de rigeur to see Woody Allen's movies for the first time on R1 DVD! One thing: the item says the disc is being released by Universal. What have they got to do with Anything Else -- wasn't it a DreamWorks release?
I began to watch the Pilot on this new set last night, and at the beginning of the episode I noticed something weird... ...when Dr Greene is assisting a drunken Dr Ross to the examining room, the very same portion of the shot is repeated for a few seconds. I can't describe it any clearer than...
Season 1 of ER was superb. I have continued to watch the show to this day, and still enjoy it immensely even if it has perhaps declined (a little bit) in quality in recent years. However, despite having accumulated over 200 mainly excellent episodes now I don't think they ever bettered...
The review posted earlier on this thread from The Digital Review doesn't mention the DTS track being out-of-sync.
I still think that the reason is the recent death of Dennis Weaver's daughter-in-law -- specifically the nature of her tragic accident.
Universal would have to be a right pack of...
Got this today, believe it or not! Picture quality is great (sound is DD 1-channel which I'm not sure I've seen outside Criterion). I haven't really listened to the commentaries but Peter Bogdanovich's is full length whilst Ms Streisand's only covers about 12 minutes of the film -- highlights...
This is out next week, and up until very recently (i.e. a few days ago), Amazon.com for one were listing a full commentary by Peter Bogdanovich and a partial one by Barbra Streisand. However, mention of these has now vanished. Can anyone confirm what's going to be on the disc? Very...
I was watching the R1 pilot movie DVD the other night, and on Side A I could hear a spidery crackling sound, beginning as the Hulk watches himself transform back into David Banner by the side of the lake, and ending 10 or so minutes later as Elaina Marks slams the door on Jack McGee (it's not...
As a big fan of the original series, and who cannot wait to get my hands on the new Pilot/"Married" DVD set, I say this... ...they were awful! A must to avoid, all three of them. Boring NTSC crud, not a patch on the pristine 35mm originals.
I bought the first season release of the Japanese R2s, and can heartily recommend them (bit pricey, though, which is why I haven't succumbed to any further ones). Picture quality isn't that fantastic, but I reckon it's as good as can be expected given that whole...
I agree that no one, me included, likes edits. However, this is a terrific release and I'm certain that this must be a copyright issue. There are 24 episodes in this set plus many great extras -- I seriously doubt we're going to get another version, so what's the big deal? Surely no one is...
I'm from the UK and had never seen this show before believe it or not (it's only had very brief runs here, and the most recent of those was more than 15 years ago). Rhoda got a full run however & I fondly remember it.
As a huge sitcom enthusiast I just had to go for this and it's a delight --...
