I've been to Bjorn's store about three years ago...they are for real, have a knowledgeable staff, and have some incredible rooms. Their super-high end room had a special surround format designed by Tomlinson Holman (the guy involved with the creation of THX)...it was featured in Sound and Vision...
They do make air tight cans, for energy efficiency I imagine...but I don't know exactly how air tight they are. http://www.pegasusassociates.com/5in...sPNHRIC504.jsp A person on a home building forum recommends the air tight cans to prevent dust and insulation infiltration from the attic.
Bobby, In order to reduce sound transmission, you would want to use ducting where the insulation is on the inside...in addition to providing thermal insulation, the internal insulation will absorb sound. I've also recall some information about people making plenum boxes that act like a...
Jay, A follow-up to Bobby's post: I understand that the travelers do not provide power to the dimmers, they only provide control. The power for the dimmers are supplied like a regular light switch: hot, neutral, ground from the breaker to the dimmer, then continue the wiring to the light...
Walter, I've got two points: 1. For a switched AC outlet that is controlled by a 12 Volt DC trigger, I've been using a Xantech AC1 for over a year with no problems. Go to www.xantech.com Then go to products and go down to the Remote Control Switchers section. You can find them...
Jay, Nice write-up! I've got a couple of questions: 1. Are the IR emitters using line voltage (120 Volts AC)? Is that why the traveler wires are Romex? When I think of IR distribution, I am used to it being low voltage (5-12 Volts DC) and using CAT-5 for the wiring. 2. Is there any...
I will second the recommendation on the Adcom ACE-515. I've had mine since 1991. It offers a solution to common problem that receiver users face...it's amazing that no one else has a similar product. Now that I've upgraded to a pre/pro with 12 volt DC outputs, I'm using a Xantech AC-1 to...
Robert, There is a connector on the back of the Ref 50 that is labeled RS-232 (it is located to the left of the multi-channel analog audio inputs). The connector actually accepts a Category 5 cable (ethernet). On the PC side, the B&K comes with an adapter that fits into one of the PC's serial...
Mark, I don't have any personal knowledge of their slide out racks. However, I have seen a lot of the slide out racks in the old Audio Video Interiors magazine...these installations tend to be super high-end in mult-million dollar homes. I do have all of my gear in a conventional Middle...
Aaron, If you require a bare end, just cut the connector off and strip the ends of the wires. This wire is so thin that even a pair of scissors will cut through it.
Mark, Are you talking about a in-wall rack that slides out, or as Felix said, just a piece of furniture with casters on it? For in-wall racks I would recommend the products by Middle Atlantic www.middleatlantic.com Smart Home sells their gear: http://www.smarthome.com/8741s.html Just...
Chip, I understand your frustration about not knowing how to set the radio presets...B&K does a poor job of describing this, as most receivers have presets specically for AM and FM stations. With the B&K products you need to make a preset for each station, just as you could make a preset...
Check out the online owners manual...they show a number of different set-ups: -behind the couch -on the sides of the couch (would allow you to place the couch against the back wall)
Have you seen M&K's Column Surrounds? Link Removed They are tripole speakers that are designed to be placed against the rear wall and can almost be hidden behind a couch as they are only 4 inches deep. They have an upward firing tweeter and woofer, a pair of 3 inch dipoles on the side...
Drew,
Not sure if I understand you, but are you buying a new one just to get a silver faceplate? Have you contacted Anthem to see if they sell the faceplates? I know B&K sells the faceplates, it includes the matching knobs for $100.
Jarrett, Another avenue to investigate are the window and exterior doors: similar to heating and cooling, the quality of the windows and doors will have a large impact on the amount of sound that is transmitted to your neighbors. The same things that increase energy efficiency will reduce...
Wayne, Thanks for the compliments. I ordered the rack mounts directly from Adcom almost two years ago. The boxes they came in match their old boxes...I imagine they have them just sitting on the shelf, and are probably from the original manufacturing run. They are a little pricey: one...
Tony, I don't know of anything readily available...but you do have some options: What I did was mount a Middle Atlantic Slim 5 rack inside my cabinet: -Since the opening in my cabinet was wider than the rack, I installed some molding so that there are no gaps...
Check out the used Adcom amps on audiogon: GFA-235: 60w by 2 for $165 (has binding posts for two pairs of speakers) GFA-2535: 60w x 4 or 60w x 2 + 200w x1 for $195 These amps were introduced 10+ years ago, received great reviews, and are still highly regarded by many. Note: I have...
I have used a Xantech AC1 since January...it works like a champ. Niles also has a model that has three outlets. I just plugged one of those three outlet adapters into the Xantech. I bought mine from Worthington Distribution: http://worthdist.com/ It will run about 60 dollars, but it does...
Wayne, Thanks for the Reply... I'm refering to the SS-150 surrounds, they weigh about 11 lbs, the main speakers, the S-150's weigh 21 lbs. I am currently using B-Tech BT-55 brackets (available from crutchfield) for mounting SS-150's to the wall. They keep the speakers in place, but are...
I would like to suspend my surround speakers from the ceiling and aim them down towards the listening position. I am using M&K SS-150 tripoles. At the new house one of the theater side walls is completely open to the kitchen. The other side wall is an exterior wall (it is difficult to...
I haven't heard it yet, but I think the all in one speaker could be a good compromise for a bedroom or for someone who is not or will not appreciate the performance of a 5.1 system with speakers for each channel. For those of us that are really into home theater I would never consider an...
M&K (Miller & Kreisel) has a similar offering: http://www.mksound.com/mp4512.htm Have not listened to it, but it's a novel concept that may be appropriate in a dorm, bed room, or conference room. The soundtrack's of many movies have been mixed on M&K's speakers.
Todd, Go to B&K's website. They have a detailed programming guide. It is geared towards custom installers: giving lots of tips and tricks and ways to prevent simplify the system. http://www.bkcomp.com/pdf/SR_10_1_%2...ing_manual.pdf Regards, Anthony
I have a similar situation with my B&K Reference 50. The amp for my sub is a pro model so I use the balanced connections and unbalanced for all of the other channels. No problems at all. I do think there is a certain coolness factor to using all balanced connections...something you can brag...
DavidLW, When you put your hand over the vacuum, the motor speeds up because the load is increasing: instead of pulling air at atmospheric pressure, it is trying to pull a vacuum. Although no air is flowing the motor is still working hard: don't confuse a negative pressure with no load.
