Just purchased the DVD and watched it, but I really can't find 'anything' about this movie that I like.
Perhaps another viewing is in order and it will change my mind... :)
Hey, guys & gals - for those of you with Pioneer DVD players that won't play Goldmember, here's the webpage at Pioneer's support section regarding firmware upgrades:
Pioneer Firmware Upgrades
It appears that the upgrades are free during the warranty period, but it also seems that you have to...
This is the first time my DVD player (Pioneer Elite DV-37) wouldn't play a new DVD. Will most retailers allow returns of opened DVDs, or are we stuck with something we can't really use?
TIA... :frowning:
Thanks to all of you for posting about this issue. I've been away from the forum for a while, but when I got home with my brand new Goldmember DVD and found that I had a problem with it on my Pioneer DV-37, I knew this would be the place to search for answers. I'll keep checking back for...
Just watched it again... and this time I watched the deleted scenes on the DVD. It was clear from the content of some of them that the editors took them out so that that the ending wasn't so decisive that he was indeed an alien. Perhaps their intent was to leave viewers wondering about Prot's...
Hi Mike & Jon - I had the feeling that...
Prot must have been alien to this world because it was clear from the reaction of the astronomers that no human could have known that information he drew out for them on the tablet. It would have been unlikely too that a human could have drawn it out...

Hi Jon_B:
I may be way off base here, but I was thinking that the alien used Robert Porter's body for five years, then left it behind, and went on about his...
Another good comparison would be that of the 1963 version of Cleopatra (with 'Liz Taylor) vs. Gladiator.
The set in the older movie simply blows away that of Gladiator. I do believe, however, that CGI will improve to a point that we can all live with it.
Well... I bought Fight Club based purely on the comments in other threads that were posted here at HTF.
The first time I watched it, something came up and I had to stop watching about half way through the movie. At that point, I was thinking perhaps I had made a mistake by spending my hard...
Haven't had my DVD player and widescreen very long, but Air Force One was one of the first DVD's I bought to go with it. Good story and suspense all the way... :emoji_thumbsup:
Hmmm... Moulin Rouge - - I tried watching it tonight based on so many here liking it so much, but I just couldn't handle it. Will be trying again in a few days, though. I've never been much of a fan for musicals, but I have enjoyed a few such as Sound of Music, Grease, Hair, and a couple...
After seeing it a couple of times, I'd give it a score of 4 or 5, out of 10. I think it boils down to poor scripting and storyline more than anything else. Tim Robbins, Gary Sinise, and Connie Nielson are certainly all very capable actors, so it's got to be that they didn't have much to work...
Thanks for the link, errol - but I don't see any reference there to the 57H81 Toshiba service manual. Can you please be more specific about where I might find it on your web site? Thanks in advance.
Good day, Jenna - this link appears to be the "owners" manual, which I already have. I'm looking for the technical "service" manual. Still haven't been able to find it anywhere, but thanks for taking the time to help with my search. :)
Okay, thanks JohnnyG - that's what I was beginning to...
I'm puzzled by something...
I've done quite a bit of study on the different widescreen DVD's, such as 1.78, 1.85, 2.35, non-anamorphic, anamorphic, etc., and I have a number of DVD's that say they are "anamorphic 2.35 widescreen" DVDs. However, when playing them on my Toshiba 57H81 (in Full...
Allan, Roy, and Steve - thanks for the feedback on this. I do understand the theory behind each step of the AVIA tweaks, but it certainly does seem odd that a scene which was obviously shot in bright sunny daylight should look like it was shot in the shade. For instance, in an old western...
Hey guys - I've been practicing with my AVIA DVD to get my new 57H81 settings tweaked a bit. I think I have it the way the people at AVIA say it's supposed to be, but when I watch DVD's with the AVIA settings, scenes that are clearly filmed out in the direct sunlight look more like they were...
Update:
I read on another site that the 50H81 manual was written for all of the xxH81 series. I downloaded it, but find no references to any model, other than the 50H81 itself. Do any of you know anything more on this subject?
Again, thanks in advance for any help.
I've been trying to find a service manual that was written for my Toshiba 57H81 Widescreen, but have had no luck. Does anyone here know where I might find one?
Thanks in advance for any help... :)
Just finished watching it for about the 10th time on the 16:9 widescreen - it's definitely a keeper. In many ways, it seems like it was released far ahead of its time. The special effects still look as good as many of those coming out now. Good thread...
Hi Mike - I don't know about the year models, but the units at my local Sams's are definitely the "H" models, and not the "HX" type. The HX models are Toshiba's Cinema Series. Here are links to Toshiba's webpages for each model:

I bought the same model from Sam's just yesterday for the same price. It was new, and still in the box. Brought it home myself, set it up, and I'm really very pleased with it so far. :)
Update: Well, I wound up going with the Onkyo TX-DS898 although it was very tempting to go with the Denon 4800. After I've had some time to play around with it, I'll report back to let you all know how I like it. Thanks again to all of you for your time and input. :)
Okay, thanks for the replies Kyle, Richard, & John. :)
I have been considering the 4802, but the price jump is a bit more than what I really wanted to spend. On the other hand, I really enjoy great sound when watching my movies. I'll give it all some more thought, then in the morning, I'll...
My First Post Here...
Hey guys and gals, I'm ready to purchase my first "real" AV receiver and am comparing the Onkyo TX-DS898 to the Denon AVR-4800. After spending several days reading various reviews and reading posts from these forums and others, I'm more confused than ever.
Do any of...
