It wasn't the Elves' theme, it was the Mordor theme. Which seems odd... except there's this bit from Doug Adams, a musician who's been an associate of Shore's on the LOTR and Hobbit movies:
My assumption from this is that the Necromancer will be seen to have some sort of connection with Azog.
I think just the opposite -- one of the benefits of the HFR was reducing the image-stuttering and dimness of typical 3D. It made the 3D far easier on my eyes, and it felt very immersive.
Except that, the book doesn't have much of a threat -- troll confrontation aside -- until they reach Rivendell. In fact, you could argue that Jackson tried really hard to boost up the pre-Rivendell threat in order to get some menace in there: Azog's scouts tracking them, Radagast's spider...
I suppose it comes down to whether you simply want stuff from The Hobbit or whether there's anything else happening in Middle-Earth that interests you.
I was a bit worried about that too, honestly, since I can easily get motion-sick as well. (CLOVERFIELD was a nightmare). 48fps never bothered me at all.
Hey Bryan -- I agree, I can think of two very specific things, one of which is un-necessary and the other of which is redundant. Together, they'd have trimmed probably about 10+ minutes off the first act, and could've been included in the Blu-ray release.
I saw it in 48fps last night.
I enjoyed it a lot -- I'm a Tolkien nut -- although I don't think it's as good as any of the LOTR films. It feels basically like an extended cut that's been released theatrically. There's moments and scenes you could remove if you wanted a clean, stripped-down...
Thanks guys, for your comments and suggestions so far. They definite help... and I realize that until I'm actually comparing units by eye I won't be able to make a final decision. I realized, somewhat after my first post, that I probably overstated our viewing distance. Right now, it's...
Hi gang, At long last, I've convinced the wife it's time we upgraded from our old 32" Wega to a new HDTV. However, I'm semi-overwhelmed by all the possibilities, choices, tech options, and so forth, and I'd love to get some recommendations from folks who're more familiar with the HD world...
I'm planning on seeing it again, just to wrap my head around the issues I have with it (and also to enjoy the mood pieces that really make up the heart of the movie)... but off the top of my head, I don't think they wrapped up one of the (major?) story points--
Did we ever find out who the...
Nathan, yeah, I understand what you're saying, and most of the time feel the same way about Mann's films. What *does* work in VICE is usually non-verbal... the weirdest thing is, though, is how much it felt like a rough cut; right down to the sound mix (which sounded oddly un-polished). But my...
I caught a screening last night -- and unfortunately, came away disappointed.
It felt, frankly, like what you might expect from the various stories about the logistical nightmares of shooting, the constant re-writing on set, and so forth -- muddled and a mess; individual scenes worked fine...
Really enjoyed it... more than I was expecting. I thought the "sappier" stuff actually worked pretty well, and the whole film was a nice mix of revisiting profane geek rants with an actual plot(!). It felt very true -- CLERKS was where Kevin Smith was back in the early '90s, CLERKS II is closer...
Interesting that many here are mixed on it, especially those that loved the first PIRATES. I didn't much care for the original -- it was okay, but dragged and I thought the third act fell apart -- but I *loved* this one. Sure, you could tweak and trim a bit and probably shave 5-10 minutes...
Come to think of it, the two-headed dragon in WILLOW was called the Eber-Sisk. (!) Admittedly Lucas spends his own money, but in a way that's insulating himself even more from any sort of criticism. With great power comes great responsibility, and all that.
I haven't had a chance to read this entire thread -- 38 pages is a tad much in one sitting even for me! :) -- but I wanted to pop in and say that BSG has picked up another fan. I'd been holding off on seeing the series for a variety of reasons, none of them particularly good (didn't like the...
I'm not so much quibbling about the set-pieces, though frankly out of the 5 major ones only 2 really worked for me (the T-rexes and the Empire State Building). But I'm all for well-executed, over-the-top action that's cleverly put together and builds on each piece (Cameron is still arguably the...
Not to inject too much box-office discussion into a non-BO thread, but... KONG is doing, well, OK. It's certainly not the gigantic hit that many expected, although it looks like it'll probably ease its way past its budget and into the low $200s (in millions of course). However, not only is it...
I certainly don't try to go into movies with a negative mindset... it's just that when something doesn't work for me, I try to figure out why. With KONG, if anything, I came pre-disposed to like it. I enjoy Peter Jackson's work -- I've liked him since I discovered DEAD ALIVE (before HEAVENLY...
Well, now we're entering into different ways of telling the story, but for me, a full-flowered romance between Jack and Ann would INCREASE the tension, since you'd have a de facto triangle of relationships that could simply not exist... thus building tension every moment any of the characters...
Sorry, I totally disagree. It's one thing to portray a relationship as lacking weight or being a missed connection between people; and entirely another thing to portray a romantic relationship and simply botch it. There's nothing to suggest that PJ and Fran and Phillipa were striving for the...
