As a lover of 1960's-70's musicals I've been reading this thread with keen interest. Today I could contain my curiosity no longer and purchased the Blu Ray. (I'm in Australia, it's been out for a short while)
The "fade to black" in the Overture made my heart jump, even though I knew it was...
Great review Neil, thanks. I am lucky enough (old enough!) to have seen both versions on the big screen and both on home video. I have not yet read the book. I like the original, it is a nicely made traditional western, with top people in front of the camera and behind. It is a very solid...
What do you mean not as you remember it? It is in the place that I remember it. As a child I was upset when the intermission appeared as they were falling to their deaths and thought the movie was over. LOL
Sorry ahollis, I wasn't clear enough in my post. Of course I thought I knew...
Yes! What a thrill to receive the Chitty BD this week and like many others, be very impressed by the results. I haven't watched it all yet, but I quickly came up with the presentation suggested above, the idea jumped out at me before I read the post. I feel a bit like a spoilt child, being...
Robots looked to be in the correct aspect ratio. It certainly didn't fill the entire IMAX screen, but most of it. No Star Wars trailer, but a great teaser for Ice Age 2. Seen at the IMAX Theatre, Sydney, the film looked absolutely S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R in IMAX, well worth a look.
Great review Patrick. Having just watched the film I pretty well agree with everything you said about it. Unlike Patrick and a lot of the others in this thread, Around the World In Eighty Days has never been a favourite of mine. I first saw it as a teenager at a drive-in in the 1970's, during...
Our "Opening Night" finally took place on Saturday July 26, 5 weeks after planned date, due to some projector "issues" now resolved. Thanks to everyone who thought about my question and suggested a title, your recommendations were appreciated. In the end, we went with My Big Fat Greek...
Thanks for the review Stuart, I'm enjoying reading your reviews and your selection of sometimes less obvious titles for review. My father took me to see The Long Ships when I was about 8 or 9, it's funny how you remember some things and not others. I'm fairly sure I saw it screened in 70mm...
The "Opening Night" of our new Home Theatre room is Saturday June 21. I have been looking for an appropriate DVD as the "premiere attraction". It needs to be: * a fairly recent release * suitable for a general ( it's immediate family of my wife and I, all adults )audience, with not too much...
Thanks for the great review Ron. The Mission brings back strong memories for me. I was working at a cinema playing the film in 70MM. It was the first 70mm presentation there, installed expressly for The Mission. Well, the sound and picture were amazing. The picture was a little dark...
I've just referred back to my original (Australian ) program for the first American Film Theatre season of 7 films. ( keeping those programs occasionally comes in handy ) It lists a total of 12 titles only, 7 from the first series and 5 listed as coming in the second. So, 12 SEEMS like the...
The use of the expression "Giant Screen Theatres" covers the other systems that compete with IMAX in the "Large Format" medium. These "giant screens" cannot use the name IMAX, as they don't utilise IMAX proprietary technology, but the idea is much the same. Opinions differ as to their quality...
Hello, Dolly ! is available as a Region 4 DVD,
The film looks quite nice, though the only extra is the theatrical trailer.
There's a link to a review of the disk below:

Be prepared to be blown away.
I've seen a series of scenes ( projected onto an IMAX screen measuring 100 feet wide x 75 feet high ) from Apollo 13 and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone that have undergone the IMAX DMR process.
These are features made on 35mm film, then put through the...
Something that has hardly been commented on in this thread: these shows are still very funny. I've only watched the Pilot and Girls..Nightclub episodes so far and they are laugh out loud funny, in a way that very few shows are today. The scene where the girls disguise themselves as yokels to...
The Comic is one of my favourite films, though it rarely gets mentioned anywhere. Dick Van Dyke is excellent in the lead. I had a VHS recording from network TV, but my wife recorded over the top of it.... She has never lived it down.
Beauty and the Beast is 1.66 in IMAX, promise.
Although there are "black bars" top and bottom, you really don't notice them.
At the top, it is the section of the screen you normally have to move your head to see, ditto the bottom, it's really low down, generally the section where the front...
Edwin,
The Lion King trailer should be tagged "January 1, 2003" at the end, that is meant to be the release date.
Middle of the back row ? A very popular position.
My preference is for the "middle of the middle": about 6 rows down ( also 6 rows from the front coincidentally) dead centre...
Bill,
Should run for AT LEAST several months in your local IMAX Theatre
Kristian,
The opening narration is still there, over the stained glass stills. Something must have gone wrong at the show you attended.
Tino,
I can't be definitive, but it appears to be 1.66 to me. Our IMAX screen is 31 metres wide, 23 metres high. If the projected image was 1.66, by my calculation tht would leave about 2.25 metres blank both top and bottom of the screen. That's about how much blank screen there appears to be...
