    good dvd player...

I recently bought a Phillips Upconverting DVD player which I love, and it was only about $80 at CC. Works great on my Panny 42" Plasma. I couldn't see spending $200 on a DVD player when in about a year, I'll wind up getting an HD/Blue Ray for about the same.

Reasons for buying LCD / Plasma

I just recently bought my first HDTV and bought a plasma. My main factors for chosing the set I did were: Cost: For the size set I wanted 42", the Plasmas were cheaper than the the LCDs of the same size, and I got a reputable name brand (Panasonic) that was rated as a CR Best Buy. There were...

    Pop goes the HT

I had this happen after an electrical storm knocked out my power. Everytime I changed channels or changed from one componant to another I got a loud pop. I ended up replacing the receiver as it was annoying.

Proof that you don't have to spend tons of money to get a good sound system.

On the other hand, if something goes wrong with that item you just bought at a pawn shop or on ebay, you are SOL. I think I would agree with gene c and go the open box/closeout route. I bought my Onkyo speakers through the dent and scratch section on the Onkyo website, full warranty for about...

    Are there really "Hi-Def" Antennas?

OK, all that said, what is a good servicable antenna that would bring in a nice strong signal. I'm in Central NJ, a little closer to NYC but close enough to Philly I could potentially bring in those channels. My past experience is that I've had issues brining in signals OTA. Preferrably, I'd...

    HDMI Question

Hey thanks for the quick response. I'm pretty good with most of this stuff, but as I get new technology, I need to understand it so I don't get things I don't need. Since it looks like the upconverting DVD players use HDMI, that will be a requirement when I buy my HDTV. I'm using a...

    HDMI Question

In the near future, I will be buying my first HDTV and probably an upconverting DVD player (I'll wait unitl they build a HD DVD player that combines the two standards before I go in that direction), and I have a question about HDMI. Since HDMI combines audio and video in one cable, and my...

    Blockbuster Online vs. Netflix

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but, I used to be a Netflix member and cancelled my membership earlier this year when I was in a cost cutting mode. It also gave me some time to catch up on some Tivo'd stuff and some other movies I'd saved up. Anyway, I'm considering re-upping...

    Big Brother 7 All-Stars

I can't stand ANY of the 5 from last year, and why should Kaysar have THREE chances in the game. By definition, ALL-STAR (i.e. best players) SHOULD include ALL the winners, but obviously, that's not the case here, and we all want to see either our favorites (in my case, that would include Dr...

    Shocked over Drew Carey decision

Earlier in the thread, the discussion centered around why Drew got cancelled, and if I recall, at the height of it's popularity it got moved opposite another high ratings show and wound up the loser in the battle. I don't recall which show it was (and it could have been the opposite, a high...

    Buying Refurbished

Just so you know, I have bought a set of 5.1 speakers from Onkyo website refurb. There was supposed to be some cosmetic problem, that I couldn't find. I have had them for 3 years now, not a single bit of problem. Great speakers and their receivers are supposed to be top notch too. I would risk it.

Recommendation for HD Ready LCD TV

On this subject, I currently have a Sony 27" SD TV, that I bought about 3 or 4 years ago. I would say it's widescreen but semi-wide screen, in that it's not square and it's got a flat picturetube. Is it true that a 27" widescreen will offer me less viewing space, and the equivilant would be a...

The Downside to buying your first HD Widescreen TV...

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is an "upscaling" DVD player. I will be ugrading to HDTV sometime over the next year, and one of the things I figured I'd need to replace is my DVD player. I have a 3 or 4 year old Sony, non progressive scan DVD player which I love, but I guess I will have...

Where's the love for THE ODD COUPLE?

Put me in the group that liked both the movie and the TV series, for what they were. The scene where Mathau throws the linguine at Lemmon in the movie is classic. Also the F.U. line by Mathau (nominated to be one of the 100 best movie lines of all time by the AFI, it's in the 400 now). The TV...

Must haves on any DVD set?

An earlier thread discussed the fact that Paramount generally releases their TV show DVDs pretty bareboned. It got me thinking. What would you consider the must haves that should be on every TV series DVD? This is my list: 1) Every episode uncut as it appeared during it's initial showing...
