I'm going to suggest that you oversimplify the dynamics of both Wayne and Lancaster's careers to the extent that the comparison loses any relevance.
Both men had their stronger and weaker performances, but the neat picture you paint of decline for Wayne and ascent for Lancaster is clearly not...
Because whoever compiled this "comparison" used Beaver's caps of the Arrow edition, and tried to match up frames as closely as possible from their TT disc. The result is that the Arrow caps are compressed JPGs, while the TT is represented by uncompressed PNG files. So, if anything, the...
It's bet that, given the enduring fan base the Duke seems to have, FLAME OF THE BARBARY COAST will sell more copies than BILLY MITCHELL. This is the problem with releasing fewer titles - who decides what to release? Cinephiles might prefer something like CHINA GATE, while there may just be...
This is great news. Kino's PD releases have been pretty solid for the most part, and this will doubtless be a huge improvement over the awful Film Chest disc - hopefully it betters the MGM DVD as well.
There are rumors that this title is something Criterion has in the works right now. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is personally my least favorite of the three Eastwood/Leone films, but it would be nice to see it in something like the quality of the Italian disc.
I can't speak about all of the songs, but at least the title track is in true stereo. According to Steve Hoffman, who mixed the stereo version of LMT, it was recorded on 'three channel 35mm mag film at 20th Century Fox on the scoring stage.' I suppose that's probably the case for the other...
I think it's worth noting here that despite carrying Bretaigne Windust's signature, all but a couple of scenes of this film were actually directed by Raoul Walsh, who took over early in the shoot when Windust fell ill. If you're familiar enough with Walsh's style, it's easy to spot the...
The French Carlotta BD of Violent Saturday looks superb, has optional subtitles, and some pretty terrific extras (in English to boot!). It's also cheaper than the Twilight Time disc, even with shipping. Unless you're locked into Region A or absolutely must have the isolated score, it's hard to...
I'd buy any Flynn on Blu-Ray. I really wish WA would get their BD program rolling. Something like Master of Ballantrae, that has been OOP on DVD for ages, seems like a good candidate for a Blu upgrade
On Blu-Ray, I would buy 2!One of the best films by Walsh or Cagney. This is the kind of thing I was hoping the WA BD program would release in the first place!
