I'm going to suggest that you oversimplify the dynamics of both Wayne and Lancaster's careers to the extent that the comparison loses any relevance.
Both men had their stronger and weaker performances, but the neat picture you paint of decline for Wayne and ascent for Lancaster is clearly not...
Because whoever compiled this "comparison" used Beaver's caps of the Arrow edition, and tried to match up frames as closely as possible from their TT disc. The result is that the Arrow caps are compressed JPGs, while the TT is represented by uncompressed PNG files. So, if anything, the...
It's bet that, given the enduring fan base the Duke seems to have, FLAME OF THE BARBARY COAST will sell more copies than BILLY MITCHELL. This is the problem with releasing fewer titles - who decides what to release? Cinephiles might prefer something like CHINA GATE, while there may just be...
This is great news. Kino's PD releases have been pretty solid for the most part, and this will doubtless be a huge improvement over the awful Film Chest disc - hopefully it betters the MGM DVD as well.
There are rumors that this title is something Criterion has in the works right now. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is personally my least favorite of the three Eastwood/Leone films, but it would be nice to see it in something like the quality of the Italian disc.
I can't speak about all of the songs, but at least the title track is in true stereo. According to Steve Hoffman, who mixed the stereo version of LMT, it was recorded on 'three channel 35mm mag film at 20th Century Fox on the scoring stage.' I suppose that's probably the case for the other...
I think it's worth noting here that despite carrying Bretaigne Windust's signature, all but a couple of scenes of this film were actually directed by Raoul Walsh, who took over early in the shoot when Windust fell ill. If you're familiar enough with Walsh's style, it's easy to spot the...
The French Carlotta BD of Violent Saturday looks superb, has optional subtitles, and some pretty terrific extras (in English to boot!). It's also cheaper than the Twilight Time disc, even with shipping. Unless you're locked into Region A or absolutely must have the isolated score, it's hard to...
I'd buy any Flynn on Blu-Ray. I really wish WA would get their BD program rolling. Something like Master of Ballantrae, that has been OOP on DVD for ages, seems like a good candidate for a Blu upgrade
On Blu-Ray, I would buy 2!One of the best films by Walsh or Cagney. This is the kind of thing I was hoping the WA BD program would release in the first place!
Amazon might have problems, but eBay is far worse. I've learned never to order DVDs of TV seasons from eBay. Ordered seasons 1-3 of Justified, and recieved outright counterfeits - they even went so far as to knock off the stickers and insert ads for their fake copies.
Sigh. Jerry Schilling isn't really a noted Elvis historian, he was one of Elvis's good friends.I'm not much of a fan of this film, but I'll get it to have the musical numbers in HD.I really wish Fox would release Flaming Star on Blu-Ray. It's Elvis's best film performance, and a superior Don...
I'll buy any John Ford film on Blu-Ray. So far we have: The Searchers: color is wrong, needs to be redoneStagecoach: excellent, considering elements. The Horse Soldiers: OKThe Grapes of Wrath: pretty good. How Green Was My Valley: excellentRio Grande: very goodFort Apache: very goodThe Sun...
Looking at the stream on Amazon Prime right now- it's non-anamorphic, faded and interlaced. In other words, it's the same PD garbage that's been around forever.
As the frame John Hodson posted demonstrates so well, it's an impossible task. Any choice one makes sacrifices crucial visual information. (In this case either the detail of the dog on the floor, or the grave look on the bartender's face- Stevens wanted to communicate both)
But in this case the "matted" ratio destroys the director's intended compositions, which is not the case for films shot open matte and composed for 1.66 or 1.85.
Do we have any evidence to suggest this, or just wild speculation? One thing is for certain, he couldn't have preferred the version now being prepared for Blu-Ray because he never saw it. I respect that Stevens was a detail oriented guy, and that Stevens Jr. Has access to his father's notes, but...
So, if a director's vision is compromised due to a studio's knee-jerk economic concerns (wanting product for that newfangled widescreen that they've been pushing) at the time of it's release, the compromised version should live on into perpetuity and we should all just pretend that it's supposed...
I'm talking about the German Blu-Ray (which, to my knowledge is the same region free Blu available in most territories. I'd wager it's the same master used on the centennial DVD, only in 1080p. And it is most certainly not 'fine'. I've seen this film many times, in about every format, and the...
I understand where you're coming from, but I feel that the case against Olive's PQ is pretty consistently overstated here. The quality of most of the more popular titles (particularly the Wayne films) are very much in line with what I would expect from the other majors. The Wayne B-westerns are...
At the beginning of last year I would have had no problem agreeing with that, but I think the quantity (and relative obscurity) of the titles released by Olive Films has reset everyone's expectations. I understand that the market for catalog classics is limited, but there are clearly smaller...
