I have a long run of speaker wire in which both wires are identical ... no markings that I can use to establish + and -. Is there a method using a battery to send current down the one of the two wires so that I can figure out when I have both ends of the same wire in order to establish polarity?

I was thinking I could use it as a "non-powered" (no separate amp) subwoofer that connects directly to the subwoofer output of my home theater amp/reciever.

Would using my existing 4-ohm home theater speakers with my new receiver that recommends 8 to 16 ohm speakers damage the speakers or the receiver? Or would they work OK, but not optimally?

Thanks Robert! Just one follow-up question for clarification: In scenario #2 that you described, when you say, "Then run more speaker wires from the high level outputs to the speakers", are you referring to running wires from the hi level outputs on the back panel to L and R surround speakers ?
