Harry Potter banned in some countries? (1 Viewer)

Just heard from someone that the radio was talking about HP being banned in some countries because it has witchcraft subject matter!
Anyone else heard anything about this? I searched the other threads and didn't come up with anything on this topic (moderators).
If it has, I think it's totally ludicrous. It's a fantasy/adventure, nothing more, nothing less.

*Shrugs* Some parts of OUR country have banned the books for the same reason. As a matter a fact Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone was the most challenged book last year according to the ALA (American Library Association).

Leave it to fantaics to challenge things without reading them.HArry potter is a popular childrens book about wizards. It must be preaching witchcraft! These are wizards who celebrate christmas for crying out loud. It saddens me that Such excellent books have prejudice heaped on them by closed minded fanatics that need something to bitch about in order to feel important. HP is actually inspiring children to READ. this is not something to be discouraged! Oh well, some people eh.

I haven't heard this, but it doesn't surprise me. As a matter of fact, 80-90% of films are banned or censored someplace. Mostly middle eastern countries, India, China and the like. Think it can't happen here? It did. Up until the mid-sixties every state and many cities like Boston and Chicago had motion picture censor boards that watched every film and decided wheither it would allow the film to be shown or not. In many cases the producers cut parts of the film to avoid having it banned altogether. As a result there might have been a dozen or more different versions in circulation because there wasn't one standard. Each board had it's own.
If you're thinking it was "hot" sex scenes and such that got cut you're wrong. A good example, in 1953, a William Holden film, "The Moon is Blue" nearly got banned because it was the first movie to describe a woman as a "virgin". My how times have changed.

I haven't read them, but I am sure that it isn't for the language, just the content. I just can't imagine the logic of any person/group banning that. Are they afraid that these kids will grow up and cast a spell on them? The more I think about that, the funnier it gets.

These are the same people who oppose The Wizard of Oz for having witches in it, even a GOOD witch (gasp!), and who want to ban Halloween.
