Robert Aldrich's Emperor of the North (1973), has arrived from Fox via Twilight Time, and while we should be thrilled to have another hole in the Aldrich filmography plugged with a quality Blu-ray, the film isn't prime Aldrich. I'd love to have his version of The Flight of the Phoenix.

The depression-era drama, starring Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine is an interesting tale, with some wonderful production work.

Of special interest to film buffs, the train sequences were shot in many of the same locations in Cottage Grove, Oregon, that were used by Buster Keaton for The General.

With the exception of the main title sequence, which looks just a tad soft (it's a dupe after all), the film looks superb on Blu-ray, with proper grain, color, black levels, etc.

For Aldrich fans this is a must own.

And for Marvin fans, and Borgnine fans - neither of which disappoint.

With you on Marvin. Not so certain about Borgnine, whose performance seems a bit one-sided and unnuanced to me.

Is that Borgnine's fault or how the part was written? I think it was the latter and he played the role well.

My take is that it's direction.

I always considered that part a psychopath that found a job in which he could be content.

My take too, the role was suppose to be one-dimensional with no redeeming qualities.

Wow, this really does look great! One of my favorite Lee Marvin films('Hell In the Pacific' being the perfect Marvin film IMO).

Twilight Time has really impressed me with some of their choices. My last order was This film, and 'Strange Invaders'. Two I never even considered would have been released on Blu-Ray. Great stuff.
